Book Description

15 April 2004
This is Kes Gray's first picture book for Hodder, following his success with Eat Your Peas, winner of the Children's Book Award 2001, and Sarah Nayler's first ever picture book. It is a funny, colourful, and clever book that will provide perfect entertainment for young children.

The story traces the 9 months during which a family await the birth of a new baby. Written from the eyes of a small child, we are given hilariously funny descriptions of the development of the baby in Mum's tummy and accounts of family life as the baby's birth draws near. In the style of the Simpsons, it is a uniquely fresh and entertaining title.

This book will appeal to all young children, and will assist their understanding and development.

Review

The illustrations are bright and distinctive and the last double spread summarising the baby's development is most helpful and likely to encourage the young listeners to talk and question (Books for Keeps 20040704)

A clear, often witty, text combines perfectly with the pictures to make this a most original picture book. (Books For Keeps 20040704)

Contemporary wordplay for the text and a jaunty colour palette make this story about the development of a baby inside Rosy's mum appealing. (Nursery world 20040610)

An excellent book with an interesting and effective design. (Books For Keeps 20040704)

Uniquely fresh (Parents News 20040604)

A funny, colourful, and clever book that will provide perfect entertainment for young children. (Amazon 20030601)

The funny descriptions of both the developing baby and accounts of family life make it an excellent and informative book. (Family Interest Magazine 20030701)

A must for anyone expecting a second child (Angels and Urchins 20030801)

...light-hearted and amusing... (Writing Magazine 20030801)

From the Publisher

This is Kes gray's first picture book for Hodder, following his success with Eat Your Peas, winner of the Children's Book Award 2001, and Sarah Nayler's first ever picture book.

This book follows the development of a baby told through the eyes of a child. Each month, the pages in the book get bigger, reflecting increase of time and size, until at the end the pages are full size, as is the baby, ready to be born.

Sarah Nayler's wonderfully quirky illustrations bring out all the humour in Kes' text. She is an up and coming illustrator with an already established reputation.

Kes Gray won the Children's Book Award 2001 for Eat your Peas with Nick Sharratt. He has also been voted by the Independent as one of the Top Ten children's authors. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't great for a toddler age 10 Mar 2013

Didn't like this book. I felt the narrative was confusing and didn't really make sense for toddler/pre-school kids. now on the look out for something more appropriate!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have book for potential siblings 22 Feb 2008
By J. Tye
Format:Paperback
A fabulous and very funny book to read to your toddler when you are expecting number 2 (or 3 in our case!). The adults will get it on another level but its a great way of introducing the idea of a sibling and explaining away the crazy things expectant mums do. My kids loved it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not necessarily for every family 13 Nov 2006
By C. J. Reno - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book, while I'm sure it is considered charming by some, is not necessarily right for every family. It certainly wasn't right for mine.

If you are trying to teach your children to use the correct names for parts of the body rather than slang terms--this is probably not the book for you. If you don't think that it is appropriate for children to notice or comment on (let alone joke about) the size of their mother's undergarments--this is definitely not the book for you.

I don't usually consider myself stodgy, but I thought the way Baby on Board handled the issues it discussed was totally over-the-top and inappropriate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute book for sibling-to-be 12 Sep 2005
By J. Cavitt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I wasn't sure what to think of this book, it's a little tounge-in-cheek, but my 3 year old ADORES it! She laughs at the pictures and the silly commentary. She has asked me to read it over and over. I think it is helping her come to grips with the arrival of her new baby sister, and to understand what is happening to me, her mommy. Cute pictures, fast read - we checked it out from the library and then had to go buy it!
2.0 out of 5 stars Not to exciting 10 Nov 2009

I wasn't impressed with this book at all. Illustrations were poor and so was the story line. It didn't really give my son a feel for what was going to happen. The only plus was it did show the mommy's tummy growing and growing and eventually there was a baby. But it didn't really touch on how the other child felt or how anyone felt really.
