Book Description

13 Feb 2012

Becoming a father is a moment in a man's life like no other.

The love, the pride, the joy and occasionally the fear stirred up inside us by the complex little being that moves into our home and our relationship takes some serious getting used to.

And then there's the really tough stuff like putting up a travel cot and installing a car seat.

Despite all this though we are often given more advice when we buy a phone than when we become a Dad...until now.

This is the indispensable manual every new dad needs from newborn to nursery, this is  Babies and Toddlers for Men.

Written by Mark Woods, author of the best selling Pregnancy for Men and proud father of two, this utterly readable guide tells you how it is in a frank and funny way that will leave you educated and energised to take on the next amazing stage of being a Dad.

More About the Author

Mark Woods started his writing career as a news journalist for the UK's national news agency the Press Association.

After covering everything from the war in Kosovo to a pair of brave pigs escaping from an abattoir, a move into television followed where he attempted to make ONdigital and then ITV Digital a huge success.

The enormous corporate disaster that followed allowed Mark to concentrate on writing and he joined the charity Comic Relief as a journalist - a position he has somehow managed to retain to this very day.

The birth of his first son inspired Mark to write the best selling Pregnancy for Men which has since gone on to become an international hit too.

Babies and Toddlers for Men, published in spring 2012, mixes the wisdom of experienced fathers and the latest research with Mark's many mistakes to help the modern day Dad make the best fist of the most important and enjoyable job he will ever have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Dads and Dads to be 12 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I am about to become a Dad for the first time and am both excited and slightly terrified at the prospect. There are alot of books about having a baby and bringing it up. There are not many which centre around the Father so this book was a welcome read. Babies & Toddlers For Men is well written and easy to follow. There are alot of usefull hints and advise on how to support your partner as well as caring for your child. This book contains alot of information about health issues such as post natal depression and how to deal with it, as well as many other factors. As the title suggests it covers from the birth right up to the nursery years. If you are an expectant Dad or already have a baby then this is a book that is well worth reading and will help eliminate alot of worries, so like me you can concentrate on the excitement and put alot of the worrys aside. Thank you for reading my review and happy parenting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on fatherhood 24 Feb 2012
By Steven Brown TOP 500 REVIEWER

I'm well in to my fatherhood journey now (well a year, it's just felt longer), and got given this book. Wish I had it before my son was born.

The book covers from hospital to 3 years old, generally arranged into 3 month slots.

Each section has sub headings of areas of interest - factual information, accompanied by a chatty, amusing narrative about that particular age category. Having read year 1's advice, after I had actually lived through it, I found it excellent. Really covers all the facts, and feelings that you have - all the info you need, without having to wade through some of the weightier baby tomes.

Each section also contains a couple of sentences from a group of fathers with a variety of thoughts and tips - again, very useful, and so many summed up the way I thought at that time.

Although I'll have to wait a few years to see if the rest of the book is as accurate, I feel it's an excellent reference guide, witty, informative, and highly recommended.

Shortly after I found out I was pregnant, I stumbled quite by accident upon Mark Woods' first book "Pregnancy For Men" and bought it for my husband. He read it cover to cover and often used to quote the funny bits to me. Amazingly he even took some of Mark's advice and set off on a wild goose chase looking for NCT classes! (But that's another story!) A few months later when we told our friends we were having a baby, we had a lot of similar "bloke guide" books gifted to us, but none were as good as the original.

So when I spotted Mark's sequel I had to get it, and it has not disappointed! It reads less like an instruction manual and more like a letter from a best mate. It's frank, funny and to the point, but still no less of a "proper" guide to parenthood. I enjoy Mark's style very much and after reading it myself, I felt like binning all the ridiculous overly-angsty women's books on babies which I've been given. Mark's advice on weaning? In a nutshell, here's the official line, here's what some people do, but basically probably best to start feeding the baby proper stuff before they start gnawing the furniture! Oh and the advice on post-baby birth control probably isn't repeatable, but he speaks an unspoken truth!!

If you have a man in your baby's life, or if you are a woman who prefers a straightforward and relaxed approach to parenting, this is the book for you. You will read it not because you *should* but because it's a great read which will make you laugh out loud at certain points.

On a final note, I suspect Mark is the kind of laid back bloke who reads his own Amazon reviews, in which case, good work!!

My wife complains that this book is not written by a doctor and is, thus, not very useful. She's wrong! It may not be the highest quality writing you have ever encountered but the author speaks from a position of experience and his insight is helpful.

By Mr. Stuart Bruce TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

My daughter's 5 months old and I wish I'd been able to get this book sooner, as I can vouch that what it says about 0-3 months and 4-6 months is spot on, and what it says about 6 months and beyond is important, reassuring, heart-warming and scary in equal measure.

Divided into three month sections (or 6 month sections after 2 years), it's the equivalent of having a one-sided chat with a good friend- let's called him "Mark"- who happens to be a bloke whose child is a few months older than yours and who's taking the time to talk about what it's like, the ups and downs, in great detail and backed up with proper facts. It's honest, it's funny (in fact in parts it's surprisingly funny), and most importantly of all it's useful.

Compared to other baby books I've read, the advice here is refreshingly honest, modern and realistic to the modern family, even to an extent you might not be comfortable with. For example in the section in which disciplining a naughty child is covered, it is mentioned that ideally you'd never raise your voice to your child; but realistically, sooner or later, you're going to, and instead of "never do that!" you get some thoughts about what to do AFTER you've done that and how best to manage the situation.

Each topic is finished off by a handful of quotes from other Dads (Mark's mates?) who throw in their own tuppence-worth, which is worth reading as of course everybody's experience varies. Whoever 'Winston' is, he deserves to write a book in his own right!
