Product Description

Review

"This is a stripped-down guide to parenthood for first-timers that covers all the obvious areas such as nappy changing, when to wean and how to clean your baby. It's well laid out so you can dip in and out of it quickly as and when you need to. The nice touches of humour make it very easy to read." Baby & You "Are you a first-time mum who has absolutely no idea of what parenthood has in store? Then this book has been written just for you. The straightforward, honest advice offered in this book has a touch of humour which is refreshing. The step-by-step guides also make everything seem so easy and stress-free. A perfect first book for all new mums and dads confused by parenthood." Pregnancy "At last. Here it is: a no fuss, no frills guide to early parenthood. It's not overwhelmingly long, it's direct and sympathetic, and above all - it has a sense of humour. This book is on our side. It is also the first book on child rearing I have ever seen that actually describes labour - nobody else will even try, instead fobbing you off with the old "it's so different for everyone" refrain. (I don't know about you but I wanted to know.) It even gives men tips on what to do and say during the process. And, it's funny." Western Morning News "A wonderfully refreshing book that doesn't preach but tells you what to expect from parenthood without scaring the pants off you! Roni Jay mixes a hands-on practical approach to parenting with nappy loads of humour. She shares her parenting journey and discoveries and makes you feel it's OK to be a good-enough mother not a perfect one." babyworld.co.uk "This is a beginner's bible." familyonwards.com "This excellent baby manual is a must for all potential parents. The style of the book is very down-to-earth and friendly, without being in the slightest bit patronising. The whole business of baby care from winding, changing the nappy down to getting baby to sleep is covered. Playing, weaning, teething - it's all there - tick points, discussion, myths. I could go on but better you buy it and read it. It's certainly not a dry instruction manual - it's different." countrydoctor.co.uk "Babies for Beginners by Roni Jay is a book that will take you through all those terrifying baby stages and give you some great tips." Woman "This is a guide to absolutely everything first-time parents need to know to look after their new baby. Its humour and honesty takes the stress out of reading what could have been a heavy textbook." Baby & You "This tackles some of the basics of caring for a new-born, including bathing, nappy-changing and winding, in a light-hearted and easy-to-understand way. Perfect for new parents." Prima Baby "Babies for Beginners is the perfect book for every first time parent confused by all the help and advice available, yet not having enough time to read hundreds of baby books. This is the ultimate guide." Bestbear.co.uk " A straight-shooting alternative to the mountains of overfussy advice offered to all new parents. This book is a great read." whatreallyworks.co.uk "The book is a great starting point for new, anxious, first time parents about to embark on ''the first'' outing/nappy change etc. It's easy to read, is written with a sense of humour and takes the fear out of getting it all wrong. I particularly liked the Pros & Cons tables e.g. whether to bottle or breast feed." forparentsbyparents.com

Product Description

First time parents are deluged with advice on how to look after their baby. Magazines, books, media, ante-natal classes, friends and family are full of what to do and what equipment to buy. It's enough to baffle any about-to-be-parent: Should you buy disposable or reusable nappies? Where are you supposed to store all that stuff? What is a cradle cap, anyway, and do you really need one? "Babies for Beginners" is the antidote to all this. It's a pared down guide to the absolute essentials you need to know, along with what you can manage without. Its humour and honesty take the stress out of the responsibility of looking after a new baby, and the step-by-step guides make everything, from holding the baby to figuring out how to play with it, easy and straightforward. This book cuts away the crap - the unnecessary equipment, the overfussy advice - and gives you the absolute basics of babycare: keep the baby alive at all costs, and try to stop it getting too hungry. By exploding the myths around each aspect of babycare, the book explains which bits of each exercise are really necessary, and which are luxuries; which pieces of equipment are essential, and which you can do without. "Babies for Beginners" is the perfect book for every first time mother who's confused by the advice and can't really believe it's necessary to spend all that money. And it's the ultimate guide for every father looking for an excuse to get out of ante-natal classes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Baby Book, 2 Mar 2004
This review is from: Babies for Beginners (Paperback)
Finally, a book that cuts through all the new mum crap out there - and tells you what you REALLY need to know.
I have a 6 month old daughter and this has been my best purchase since giving birth! I highly recommend this book for all new (and old) mums out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MOST READABLE TOP TIPS YOU'LL COME ACROSS, 16 April 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Babies for Beginners (Paperback)
If I'd read this before having my two children I'm sure my wrinkle, grey hair and bags-under-the-eyes quota would have been significantly reduced - if only because it's such a witty read. I scanned it in one evening and have a waiting list for it among my friends. Its best selling point is its amusing, no nonsense, decide for yourself approach. Read this before any other "how to be a fab parent" guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't have done it without this book, 3 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Babies for Beginners (Paperback)
This fabulous, fantastic baby book has just made such a difference to my life. It is clear and simple - even a new mother can understand it and our brains do turn to custard. It is funny - don't make me laugh with my stitches in.... It is practical and wonderfully helpful. This book has made such a difference to me. I was quite scared of being a mum for the first time and the other books were too technical, too full of jargon and i felt I was being patronised. This is written on a level that is just right - bet the author is a real mum who understands life from the other side and not just a writer with no real hands on experience.
Brilliant book. Brilliantly written . top marks for reassurance and simple practical help.
It should be given free to every new mum in every maternity ward in every hospital in the country. Why isn't it? Come on NHS - do something innovative......
