My one year old son absolutely loves this film. He would watch it day and night if I'd let him!

Animation:
The animation is in the great 'old school' style I remember as a child. It is brightly coloured with dynamic imagery to capture the imagination of young children.

Appropriate for the very Young:
Not too scary for the youngest of children. I have found that some other 'children's movies' frighten my one year old--in this DVD no real violence is shown, but conflict is expressed in a very constructive way.

Storyline:
Solid plot with good character development for a children's video.

Music and Vocals:
The music and singing are excellent and engaging for young ears-- great way to introduce young children to an operetta.

Looking for early Drew and I found this, but the Drew version is 1986 and it does not appear to be available on DVD.

From IMDb user reviews the 1997 appears to be considered as a better movie, by many. However if one approaches this as a fan then who knows how it will appear, likely as really nice in this particular case?

I did get my copy of this, not seen yet, for a fairly low price so I am shrugging but also hoping to find a DVD of the 1986 some time. There is always a chance that it might be released just to appease Drew fans?

The rating says that I have not seen this yet but expect it to be reasonable, a need to give a rating is a problem with me on this.

Bought two copies of this for my young grandchildren, & they are all delighted with it, .....having previously been disapointed with the newer version, which is not animated, & not really very interesting!

My Boys Love this movie!! Buy it , so will you.... 22 Jan. 2006

I have 3 boys 8,5, and 3 and this is a favorite with each of them as they grew up!! My little one is really nuts about this movie. I love the music and the catchy tunes. I am continually amazed by Christopher Plummer who is the voice of Barnaby... he is just one of the best. I grew up loving him in the Sound of Music and now his talent is being enjoyed by my boys. It takes a real talent to pull off the Barnaby character. Don't pass this up!!!!

Not the Herbert musical, but fun for kids and Mary's the boss now 4 Jan. 2013
By Greg Ehrbar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
The last non-stage version of Babes in Toyland was the only animated version ever produced. MGM had intended it for theatrical release, but after the failure of All Dogs Go to Heaven 2, the project became direct-to-video (and I suspect the budget was cut). The resulting film was first released to VHS and is now available on DVD.

MGM's animated Toyland has its head in the '90s, very much a product of the "second Golden Age" of Disney animated musicals and modern-day sensibilities. Virtually the entire storyline is new. Mary (who bears a resemblance to Disney's Belle from Beauty and the Beast, is now the modern concept of a strong, assertive woman who runs her late father's toy factory. Tom is her employee, a dreamer who resembles the hunky male lead in Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. Mary says Human Resources phrases to Tom, like "I admire your enthusiasm." Both characters have those wedge haircuts that came and went in the '90s.

Gone is the Herbert score, except the "big two." The new songs are quite wonderful, very much in the Howard Ashman/Alan Menken mold of the Disney films (and every studio's animated feature that tried to repeat their successes).

That may be a bit of nitpicking, because this Toyland is actually quite entertaining, especially for young children. It is animated very much like the high-grade TV animation of Animaniacs, with lots of action, though it does sag a bit (as do many direct to video features). Despite its 90's-ness, it holds up very well today and is worlds better than the sadly lacking 1986 Barrymore TV movie.

Great for a 3 year old! 12 Dec. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
My 3 1/2 yr old has watched this over and over. She loves Tom the Piper's son, and Mary (of little lamb fame). She also loves the music. The bad guys are not too scary for a three year old (at least not mine).

Some of the music written for the operetta by Victor Herbert

did not appear in this video, but I still liked it very much.

At least the stirring "March of the Toys" was included. Barnaby

was shown as he was-- a real meanie. It is odd that he forbade not only TOYS for Jack and Jill but locked them in the attic and would not let them eat! Was he THAT bad in the original oper-

etta?

I have been looking every where for this DVD and I was so excited when I finally found it here on Amazon. I have already watched this DVD several times since I got it and it is wonderful, it doesn't skip or anything, it is just the way I remember it as a kid.
