Classic musical. Tom the Piper's Son (Tommy Sands) is about to marry Mary Quite Contrary (Annette Funicello). On the eve of their wedding, evil miser Barnaby (Roy Bolger) hires two henchmen to drown Tom and steal Mary's sheep, cared for by Little Bo Peep (Ann Jillian), thus depriving Mary and the children she lives with of their livelihood, forcing her to marry Barnaby. The sheep are stolen, but Gonzorgo (Henry Calvin) and Roderigo (Gene Sheldon), Barnaby's henchmen, double-cross him by selling Tom to a band of gypsies instead, leaving Tom with the opportunity to escape and make his way with Mary, Bo-Peep, and other Mother Goose characters to Toyland.

The last review was actually not entirely true... The film that s/he spoke of was the 1990s remake of this DVD, which is a musical.

It can be loved by people of all ages, and is a real treat to watch. Digitally enhanced in this DVD version, the music and dance numbers are ten times better than they ever were before, and you can watch it as often as you like without losing quality.

The plot centers around a place where fairytales and nursery rhymes are real, and everyone gets along brilliantly. Little Bo Beep, however, is not as happy as she should be because she is in debt, and the man that she loves has been kidnapped. Her children run off into the Woods Of No Return in search of a resolve, but get lost. Everyone ends up in the middle of the woods, a place called Toyland, where a Toymaker and his assistant make toys for the children, and must help him make the toys, but the debt that is owed by Bo Peep is coming after her, in the form of a very nasty (but awfully funny) man and his sidekicks, who will stop at nothing to ensure that the bad guy marries our heroin so that he can own all of her land. How will it end? Happily, of course, like all musicals! But it is the trip that matters.

Good fun if a bit dated. My grand children seem to have enjoyed it and have watched it more than once. It's a lot more pleasant and less scary than many more recent "fairy tales". I enjoyed it.

Sadly, despite the presence of the superb Ray "Scarecrow from Oz" Bolger, Annette Funicello and Ed Wynn Snr this film feels very dated and dull. I think its because of the numerous musical numbers which, instead of moving the story along, stop it dead in its tracks because they really are BAD songs. Also anyone who remembers the 30s version with Laurel and Hardy will notice how missed they are in this remake.

Sadly the dvd is full screen and not widescreen so some picture lost and the picture quality is rarher grainy and unimpressive at times. The film does pick up as soon as Ed Wynn appears but on the whole it appears to be Walt Disneys attempt at making his own Oz classic...so many similarities.

It's cheesy and often tacky, but that is what makes this film appealing. It is dated, but that adds to its nostalgic charm. I'm sure that younger kids of today will enjoy it just as much as the kids of the 60s did!
