Book Description

5 Sep 2002 Brock & Kolla Mystery
BABEL is set in the south east of London, around a former polytechnic, now the University of East London, in Docklands. The brutal murder of the university¿s professor of philosophy is headline news and DCI Brock is brought in to investigate. The university campus is home to many students drawn from the large and varied ethnic communities of south east London. When it becomes clear that the motive for murder may be political and the murderer a Muslim, the public is outraged. Following her terrifying experiences in SILVERMEADOW, DC Kathy Kolla is on leave, so burned out that she¿s considering leaving the force for good. But you can¿t keep a good detective down and soon she¿s on the phone to Brock asking to be put on the case ¿ The construction of this detailed, intricate plot is a joy ¿ as ingenious as Colin Dexter. It¿s a complex, rich and intelligent novel and will surely bring Brock and Kolla to a wider, appreciative readership.

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical Maitland 16 Oct 2013

I have read a few of Barry Maitland's books and have found them not an exciting read. I may be wrong as there would be a lot of folk who would love his books. Try for yourself and see what you think.
2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible edition! 24 Aug 2013
By Kevin Bursley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The book itself was enjoyable; the Brock and Kolla series is good. There were so many problems with the Kindle edition, I couldn't believe that Amazon had the nerve to sell it. At times I had trouble following the story because of missing sections, no section breaks and misspelled words.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but Kindle issues 11 April 2012
By ejknack - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First, let me say that I enjoyed this book, and I am a fan of the series. The plot is relevant (and interesting since it was written prior to 9/11/2001), and I have always enjoyed the author's writing style. So, I would recommend the book.

My issue was with the Kindle version of the book. In most cases where the word "I" began a sentence the number 1 was substituted. In MANY places throughout the book there were either open quotes to begin dialogue with no end quotes, or the other way around. This became very distracting, and I had to reread many paragraphs to determine where one character's dialogue ended and another's began. The worst issue was one place where, in the middle of a sentence, a good bit of text was dropped from the book. The main character was speaking to a minor character, and suddenly was speaking to a different character in a completely different location. To date, I still have no idea how much text was dropped. Luckily, I was able to figure out what happened, and it did not impact my understanding of the story, only my enjoyment. I let the customer service people at Amazon know, and they offered to refund my money and said that they would look into the problem. I don't know if the problem was corrected.
