The German album and the first album proper get all the plaudits of course. And so very brilliant they are too. But Babe Rainbow is so much more than a slightly less impressive follow up album, or a marker in the 'wilderness period'. It may not have Terry Bickers volatile genius sprinkled all over it, but it's a different album reaching for a different feel. We could use words like accomplished and mature, but it's also haunting, emotive, and very brilliant its own right. Far from being slightly inferior to the earlier bursts of wanton creative energy, this is actually the sound of a songwriter and band at the very peak of their powers. An Audience with the Mind makes a fine and equally worthy companion album, too.
