Review

Forthright, wilful and at times hilariously funny, Babble is a delightful dip into the mind of one of Britain s most dazzling and unpredictable men. --Mail on Sunday

Saatchi, famed art collector and advertising mogul, addresses a vast range of subjects, from Orson Welles to politics and the Seven Deadly Sins in a witty and engaging manner that will captivate you from start to finish. --Mayfair Magazine

Thoroughly recommended - Marcus Berkmann --The Spectator

The advertising legend selected by the BBC as one of the 60 New Elizabethans who have most influenced the past 60 years in Britain displays a curiosity about people which is perceptive, penetrating and challenging. However, he takes neither himself or his views over-seriously, and a quirky sense of humour runs through all of the essays contained in this very entertaining book. --AdNews

About the Author

Charles Saatchi has been one of the moving forces of the modern age. Founder of global advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi, and the most important art collector of our time, he's vigorously shaped the contemporary art scene while remaining a reclusive, even elusive, figure. He was selected by the BBC as one of the 60 'New Elizabethans' who have most influenced the past 60 years. His previous bestselling books include Be The Worst You Can Be in which he answered questions from journalists, critics and members of the public with brutally frank candour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Plunge Into a Blossoming Age 3 April 2013
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Charles Saatchi, set apart from his supermedia wife Nigella Lawson, tells the story of a man who has been the antithesis of publicity in terms of media exposure. Here, he provides us with his thoughts and opinions on a diverse catalogue of etiquettes that border on cliche. His story is personal, covering his recollections and experiences with orchestras, contemporary music and film, art collections, history, love and marriage and wealth. The latter he does not dwell upon, but it is clear as the old maxim says 'if you've got it you don't have to flaunt it'. Maybe this is something of an anachronism given the media exposure he and his wife have.

His opinions on the wealthy are equally individualistic and maybe unrealistic in that he sees money as an achievement. His 'Have not want not' philosophy has religious overtones of God blessing the righteous (and the rich). Saatchi writes with a large amount of controversy but the hang-on is humour. His methodology may be disagreeable but his results and work ethic cannot be. He is clear in his philosophy of life that nothing is given to the winners, it is earned. The losers can limp along but topping the tree is for the climbers who have the tools to stay there. Criminals are underachieving villains (or unsuccessful) who deserve the maximum of punitive justice.

An honest account of a household name that has a brand of wealth. His story is direct and funny with a depth of personal experience and anecdotes as it should be. A successful man with a likely successful book that is a delightful insight of his pathway and methods to prosperity and fame, albeit in an often unorthodox way. Failure is not in his vocabulary. Hugely readable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, frustrating and fascinating. 18 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I've traditionally had ample reservations about Mr Charles Saatchi. I have always found his excessive love for capital and material a little too vacuous and conceited for my liking. Mr Saatchi in many ways seems to be someone begging for attention by playing the hard to get role, however to be honest, after reading Babble I'd say I've now grown a new found respect for the man. It is not that I do not disagree with him anymore, in fact I know loath many of his views, but the way in which goes about describing his subject succinctly and in such an entertaining manner, it makes you love to disagree with him.

He is almost pseudo-polemic, carefully selecting his contentious arguments and presenting them in a clear and concise manner inviting you to attack him, but presenting such strong points that makes you really think hard about your counter arguments.

The best thing about these collection of articles is their simplicity. It's refreshing to see someone leaving all the jargon behind and using proper clear simple english to make his point.

Downs to the book are the potential copying from other sources (needs to probably be looked into) and potentially the suspiciously low res images, unless that was ironic, in which case, bang on!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stolen goods? 16 Mar 2013
By AT
Format:Hardcover
I'm enjoying it thoroughly, but surprised at how much of the writing has been lifted word-for-word from other Internet sources.
Plus the images look suspiciously like low-resolution google grabs too, even the cover image on close inspection?!
But an entertaining read all the same!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much more than babble 7 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The content of this book belies the light-hearted title. Yes, it's easy to read, and conversational, but it is really well-researched, with clever imagery (as you would expect from Saatchi) and thought-provoking articles. Thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening, and at the same time as amusing. In short, an excellent book - perfect for dipping in and out of.
