Product Description

A woman gives birth to a child whose evilness threatens all mankind
Mary Kate is an ordinary woman: a waitress in a diner, stuck in a loveless marriage to an English-major-turned-cabbie. But whoever assaults her in a New York City alley is far from ordinary. As the man’s icy grip burns her skin, she couldn’t grasp the dark fate that awaits her.
The rape leaves her carrying a child, who she and her husband name Jeffrey. As they try to live as a family, a mysterious force poisons them against each other. Finally overcome with hate for her husband, Mary Kate kills him, sending herself to jail and the child to an orphanage. There the boy takes a new name, Baal, and develops sinister powers that flourish as he approaches adulthood. When Baal becomes a man, the whole world will tremble before him.

Brief and not that special. Well written but does not grip. It's not the Omen and it feels like the authority bored and cut whole sections of story

3.0 out of 5 stars Not classic McCammon! 27 May 2010
By Lexicon
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Sadly this book is not reminiscent of what McCammon can do on a good day. The book starts well describing Baal as a child and the disruptive nature of his ever growing power. The last two-thirds of the book is unbelievable, hurried and loses a lot of the momentum of the first third of the book. A good set-up but let down by a poorly written ending and saddled with a flagging middle. This book could have been so much better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage 25 Mar 2009
This book is utter garbage. The characters are not even two-dimensional, have no backgrounds, appear from nowhere and disappear without resolution. The plot itself is a disjointed succession of unpleasant events with no overall theme or story at all. I don't think I will ever read a McCammon novel again. This is an insult to the intelligence of the reader. If I could have given it zero starts, or a minus number, I would have. I wouldn't even throw it at my worst enemy. It really is that bad.
