And that problem is that most of us just don't know how to lead meetings properly. Too often they are unstructured, aimless and, well, boring. It comes back to the age-old British problem of lack of training--almost certainly nobody ever showed you how to do it the right way.
Successful Meetings Skills claims to be equivalent in scope to a two-day instructor-led course. While we have some reservations--the ability to grill your flesh-and-blood tutor (and interact with your classmates) adds a quality a CD-ROM can never replicate, this program has big things going for it. First you can work at your own pace, recap on lessons as much as you want and refresh your skills before the big meeting.
Structure is all here. You are led through developing and using an agenda, sticking to the meeting aims and not over-running. You learn how to deal with obstructive delegates, how to use your voice effectively and how to keep the time interesting. You will learn how to identify your strengths and use them in your presentations. You even learn the boring but crucial stuff about booking a venue and using audio-visual aids effectively--many's the speaker who has turned up only to find the pencils haven't been sharpened and the coffee ordered.
Your onscreen tutor shows you the way and then invites you to role-play. It's not rocket science but it is commonsense and clearly explained. And at a reasonable price for sensible structured advice that will equip the attentive students for successful meetings, it will pay for itself a hundred times over in time saved and targets accomplished.--John Rennie
