This book has well earned the title "thriller". It is the best of it's genre that I have read in a long time. It has an interesting, well constructed plot with a suitable number of twists, surprises and sub-plots. The characters are natural as is the dialogue. It has a wonderful "baddie". Butler Jack is as entertaining as he is psychotic. This novel somehow manages to combine the relaxed ambience of a "buddy" novel with the tension of a thriller. It is an excellent read from the opening passage to the very last page.

I'm only halfway through but Hall seems to handle "weirdo" thrillers like a Big League pitcher, seamlessly sliding the action through his intriguing characters. Best of all, he DOESN'T tell you what the characters are wearing, eating or drinking (a la Robert B. Parker)! I'm enjoying "Buzz Cut" a lot.

There is a sinister note left untouched in this thriller from James Hall. Who is the hapless Bobby Dorfman, left hanging in front of the TV camera on the cruise ship? There is more to this character than the casual reader can surmise from his early demise (Bobby's). Will a new novel tell us why he met such an unfortunate end? I can hardly wait. (By the way; who was Joseph McCabe, one of the unheralded victims of that awful lady in Mean High Tide?)
