Product Description

Product Description

'Buena Vista Social Club At Carnegie Hall' is only the second album ever released by the original Buena Vista Social Club; this extraordinary collection of Cuba's greatest musicians includes Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, Compay Segundo, Cachaíto López and Guajiro Mirabal.

The Carnegie Hall concert was a unique event that can never be repeated. It was the focus of the Wim Wenders award winning film which has helped spread the story of the incredible characters that made up the band. 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the Carnegie Hall concert.

Produced by Ry Cooder and the same talented team that produced the original album. The album includes previously unpublished photographs from the concert and a 4,000 word sleeve note by Ry Cooder and the musicians themselves.

The performances on the album are absolutely brilliant and capture a collective enthusiasm, warmth, energy and feeling of triumph that was felt together by both audience and band that special night back in 1998.

Personnel:
Juan de Marcos González - (bandleader, backing vocals, güiro), Ry Cooder - (guitars), Rubén González - (piano), Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo, Hugo Garzón, Pío Leyva, Manuel 'Puntillita' Licea - (vocals), Manuel 'Guajiro' Mirabal, Octavio Calderón - (trumpet), Jesús 'Aguaje' Ramos - (trombone), Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa - (guitar, vocals), Benito Suárez Magana - (guitar), Barbarito Torres - (laoud), Orlando 'Cachaíto' López, Salvador Repilado - (bass), Joachim Cooder - (drums, percussion), Alberto 'Virgilio' Valdés - (maracas, backing vocals), Amadito Valdés - (timbales), Angel 'Terry' Domech - (congas), Roberto García - (bongos, cowbell, güiro)

BBC Review

With sales of more than eight million copies of their eponymous 1997 debut, Buena Vista Social Club must be a strong contender for the most popular World Music act ever. Admirers of the crack Cuban collective will have encountered substantial parts of this recording before in Wim Wenders' acclaimed documentary profile of the group. Even so, this two-disc release of their only visit to New York is not to be missed.

Caught live at the city's legendary Carnegie Hall in July 1998, this truly historic concert marked the American debuts of the band, all of them at the time well into their 70s, 80s and 90s. A decade on, the impact of musicianship as considered, consummate and casually thrown off as this remains magical and mesmerising. This is the real thing, and how - music-making of a standard rarely achieved in any genre that communicates with a joyous, life-affirming vitality that is simply impossible to resist or refuse. It's a shot of pure musical adrenalin that hits the mark every time.

Produced by Ry Cooder, the Carnegie Hall concert thrillingly caught the Buena Vista Social Club at the very height of their powers, and at the very end of their colossal achievements. The band never played together again and within all too short a time, key contributors like Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén Gonzalez and Company Segundo had died.

But the legacy left behind remains vividly alive, as this 16-strong collection of the group's most popular pieces amply demonstrates. Yet while tracks like Chan Chan, Orgullecida, Candela and Veinte Años retain the capacity to leap vibrantly out of the speakers, what continues to amaze and astonish in equal measure is the sheer technical virtuosity of the playing, the impeccably attuned sense of ensemble, and, above all, the unfettered and infectious joy in making music.

We may never see or hear the likes of Buena Vista Social Club again, but what relatively little we have on disc will endure and abide. This startlingly good, beautifully recorded one-off provides a covetable reminder of a peerless musical phenomenon at its glorious peak. --Michael Quinn

I'm not sure why it has taken so long to release this live CD (it was recorded in 1998 and previously fans have had to make do with the highlights in Wim Wenders film 'The Buena Vista Club') but at last, here it is, in all its glory!
All the musicians featured were also on the studio album. They may be in their 70's, 80's and 90's. Some of them even retired, but here they all are making their US debuts and this recording shows what we've been missing.
The concert is structured around the studio album featuring favourites like 'Candela', 'El Carretero' and 'Chan Chan' but there is plenty of opportunity for them to improvise and there are some superb solos as well. The piano playing by the late, great Ruben Gonzalez is worth the price of the CD alone! The quality of the musicianship is outstanding throughout and puts many younger ones to shame.
It is a fitting tribute to these remarkable musicians, some of whom have sadly passed away. This CD and its studio album was made for the love of music, not because a record contract stipulated they had to be in the studio to make it. Surely that is the rarest quality of all.
Viva La Vida? I don't think so, Viva BVSC! Viva Cuba!

This really is a fantastic double live album - beautiful package, and the extensive liner notes are an interesting read - a really nice supplement to the music. Even if you are familiar with the Buena Vista story, the extra info really brings home how historic the appearance of all these Cuban musicians at Carnegie Hall really was.

The recording is exuberant and really captures the atmosphere, great musicianship and spirit of the event. I can't recommend this highly enough.....if you loved the original BVSC album you will find something new to appreciate in these live performances!

From the opening stocatto chords that provoke the applause to greet "Chan Chan", this is a feast for the ears. The musicians (many who were well into their twilight years) play with an enthusiasm, humour and real joy that puts many egotistical grumpy, cynical modern bands to shame. This is not the art of the ego, it is the melody and rhythm of Havana and the Cuban people, with all the Band's determination to play to their peak on what they will have seen as their "big night of nights" on this tour - Carnegie Hall in the USA - where Cuba has been vilified and discriminated against since the revolution.

This is folk, jazz, dance -but more than that- sheer beauty and joy combined with technical excellence and a real feel for the music and sound they create. I defy you to hear see them play and not leave with a smile on your face!

But while the Buena Vistas are the first of the Cuban bands to be heard in the west, be in no doubt that there are many younger and possibly even better bands still waiting to be heard in the west.

I would just love the success of the Buena Vistas to prompt record companies now to snap up bands like Los Cuarteto Hermanos (who most of you are yet to hear outisde of Havana) and their wonderful violin player Elisabeth Corralles so we can all hear them for ourselves.

If you have found this then i imagine you are already familiar with the original...this is a longtime coming then- the album opens with 3 of arguably the best, and certainly most lively in this case, tracks on the original album, Chan Chan, De Camino A la Vereda, y El Cuarto de Tula--the energy and vibrancy from the off is incredible, it sends shivers down your spine. Ibrahim Ferrer is in absolutely amazing form, as are everyone else; you can tell they are all enjoying it immensely. And the enery and rapture from the audience only adds to it. Just buy it and see.

Better than expected - live performance, rare, of this amazing group of talented musicians, some in their 80's and 90's. If you are a fan of latin american dance too, then this is a must to get you in the mood.

If you are a fan of classic Cuban Son big band in it's purest form this is the best of the best.
The legendary Cuban old timers at their finest moment, all together live in the venue none of them ever dreamed they would perform in: Carnegie Hall.
To get the live performance in an album with all the talent, emotion and enthusiasm of the performance that night is a gift to those of us who love this music.
This will never happen again, but we can savor it and dream back with this album. Magic.
