Summary UPDATED: April 2012:
Just to let you know, this device (Home Hub 1.5) may be in declining usage as its successor is now the BT Home Hub 3.0, as this device is out of box to be used on B.T. only Broadband landline, wireless and Cable networks.
Before buying this device, I was being targeted by ruthless hackers. So I swapped my previous internet provider to B.T. All - in - all, I have used this HUB for 3 years and B.T has proved much more secure than my previous I.S.P's. You may need to know that this hub is designed to only support B.T. broadband services. Although there may be ways to broaden - out the customer base. I have NO qualms in maintaining my account with B.T.
Reliability
A 'reset to defaults' switch on my now 3 year old hub proved to be faulty, (well out of 18 month B.T. warranty) so i have bought another replacement hub whilst i had some spare cash. (SEE downtime)
Handy idea
This 1.5 hub does have a connection that allows any current 'phone to plug - in to it and make VoIP calls. However, newer B.T. accounts will NOT be able to use this facility as its being withheld and will need to upgrade to newer hubs and accounts.
Physical
The device is compact, but bit larger than some other makes of router. In the parlance of its makers B.T. / Thompson its called a 'Hub'. This device has 2 Ethernet ports, a USB-A, and USB-B ports big and little usb ports), a socket to connect a land-line 'phone, a broadband connection in, and power in. It can handle several wireless connected devices within the settings.
Setting up
I contacted B.T. and my internet account was set up in less than 20 minutes. Unfortunately i had to enter hospital for 3 weeks, but this did not affect my payments and the B.T. staff proved sympathetic. At the risk of laboring my poor experiences with my previous providers, in my opinion this device is much easier to set up than several other providers that are supposed to be 'beginner friendly'. All that I needed to set it up is in the small box. A great touch is that a on your hub is a unique series for alphanumerical characters that are used to set it up, that is a great security feature.
Performance
Download speed
As I am relativity close to the B.T exchange, my maximum download speed is 8 Meg / sec , I have found I can enjoy a maximum speed of 7.5 Meg / sec, with an average of 5-6.8 Meg / sec.
Downtime
In my experience of this device, the hub needs a touch of its reset button every other month to make it get around a lost signal. This a a few minutes a month or more. (see summary for this account).
Security
This device cannot use 'N' - based security, but can us a, b, g standards. It can use WEP, WPA standards. It does has a good firewall that seems to help and improve a great deal my security.
I would recommend an anti-virus / firewall internet security package of your choice, and say as well 'IOLO System Mechanic 9.5', but its up to you. Please note the security of this device is only as good as your computer updates allow it.
General comments
This has been pleasant to use and own and (i.m.h.o) is worth its money.
