If you wish to use the hub for more than standard connectivity and cheap phone calls, beware.
I've been trying to get one of these hubs working as part of my home network to allow media streaming from a NAS box to other UPnP devices such as Xbox.
Firstly, most will have seen the BT adverts where one of these hubs is marketed on the basis of its centricity to home networking and media sharing - right?
Wrong - the reality is that whilst it may offer greater wifi range, what's the point if the traffic is inconsistently blocked? That is my experience, so in effect the hub is useless in some media sharing setups. As a test, I've resorted to using an old (non BT) hub, and that handles media just fine.
A check of user forums will unearth a range of issues, and it seems clear that this hub is the root cause.
To date, BT help and support has got me nowhere, in fact I could not even get someone to confirm BT had any accountability other than for the broadband connection. The cop-out position they have taken is "incompatibility". That would be an incompatibility that a) they don't document, and b) they cannot be bothered to iron out with other vendors who use standard technologies.
Way to go, BT.
Update: Jan 2011.
I've binned it and it felt good.
In its place I now have a Netgear DGN2200. So far this has not dropped connection, and has allowed streaming of media from my NAS straight to my Xbox360, without the need to have my PC running. It's all controlled from the Xbox user interface. Only thing I have not managed to get working so far is MS Media Center (PC has Win7) but judging by experiences of others, this does not seem unusual!
Furthermore, I've recently found that my HH phone would not connect to certain numbers. Completely random behaviour, so saving call costs became a non-argument for me. I've said it once, and I'll say it again - BT HomeHub v2=utter rubbish, as is the so called support from BT.
BTW the Netgear has a USB port, like the HH V2. Unlike the BT hub however, I can actually use this one!
So it's quite simple to connect another USB drive to the hub, allowing for easy data management between that and my NAS.
