Product Description

What Is the BT Smart Home Cam 100?

BT's Smart Home Cam 100 is a Wi-Fi video monitoring product that allows you to stream video remotely on your smartphone or tablet, meaning you can stay connected with people, places and pets wherever you are in the world. Whether you’re at a friend’s, at work or on holiday you can view your home within seconds. The BT Smart Home Cam 100 works via Wi-Fi, so there is no need for unnecessary cables running throughout your home. As long as the camera is within range of your router's Wi-Fi signal you can place it anywhere.

You can access your BT Smart Home Cam 100 video stream via the free iOS or Android apps or the web portal; all you need is an Internet connection on your smartphone or tablet to enjoy the additional peace of mind on offer.

The BT Smart Home Cam 100 allows you to keep an eye on your home when you’re not there. Whether you’re at friends, at work or enjoying a relaxing break you can view your home in seconds.

The BT Smart Home Cam 100 has a motion and sound detection feature. You decide what disturbance is worthy of setting off the monitor and the BT Smart Home Cam 100 will send you a notification. You can then access the video stream to uncover what triggered the sensor. What’s more, purchase a Premium Services feature and a short video clip will be stored in the cloud when motion is detected.

Download the free iOS or Android BT Home Cam app to manage your camera and video settings remotely. This simple to use app gives you the ability to view your video stream and record or take images, alter the camera settings, invite friends to access your video stream and so much more. You can even link your app to multiple cameras to view video from different locations.

Unlike CCTV and other monitoring products, the BT Smart Home Cam 100 is simple to setup. Download the app, plug in your BT Smart Home Cam 100 and pair the camera with your router and phone or tablet. No wiring your camera to your router, no CD, no need for a laptop. All you need is your camera, Wi-Fi and a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

When you see something interesting or fun on your BT Smart Home Cam 100, you may want to be able to share that moment with family and friends. With a single tap or click you can save an image or video to your device. They are yours to share with as many friends and family as you want. Just because it’s your camera doesn’t mean only you can view it; invite your friends and family to view your video stream. This feature is ideal for sharing those unmissable moments or for additional peace of mind when you’re away from home.

The BT Smart Home Cam 100 has night vision to ensure you can keep an eye on your home night and day. What’s more, the massive 93⁰ field of vision means you can always see what is going on at home.

I so much wanted to love this product. I've had experience with a couple of cheap web-security cameras that are difficult to set up (requiring wired connection initially) and unreliable connectivity (never managed to get it to work with WiFi at all), and poor software (insisted in starting in Chinese and would not remember preference for English) (this one: Wireless IP camera Pan/Tilt 2-ways Audio Mobile Viewing WEP/WPA/WAP2 wireless Wi-Fi Pan/Tilt internet IP camera day and night vision CCTV security monitor built-in microphone and speaker allow you to communicate with people directly support mobile phone...).

The BT Smart Home Cam works flawlessly with WiFi, in fact, there is no other way to set it up - you have to do it though an iPhone or Android app, though a smartphone, connecting to the WiFi signal sent out by the device itself (an interesting approach). Setting up is a doddle compared to the Chinese branded cameras, and very different. There was no need for setting up the router for "pass through" or any other changes.

I used the Android app - it was fairly easy to run though the setup (as per the enclosed easy-to-read leaflet). Some things about the app could be improved, such as the Android keyboard covering the buttons and even the "description" input field, making entering a description impossible (but not necessary, so ignored). Moving forward though the setup needed hiding the keyboard to reveal the "continue" buttons. Small but silly design flaws. The App feels like it has some rough edges, that may well be smoothed out in future releases.

Once video started, it was stunning.

A well packaged and well built and designed camera made a very positive impression out of the box, as did the setup. Flick a switch on the back for setup mode, connect your phone/tablet to it and latch it onto your wireless, then flick the switch off setup mode. Done.

The image quality of the camera is excellent, a 720p resolution should be plenty for most. Unfortunately, as good as the camera is in terms of hardware and picture quality it lacks any real useful software features seen on almost any other device of its type at this price point.

After setting it up I was pointed to a page where I could subscribe to take advantage of additional features at a quoted cost of £9.99. It was unclear whether this was a one off cost or a monthly fee, I didn't want to continue to find out.

I notice from other reviews this may be a monthly fee and also notice BT responding to reviews regarding this issue. Personally I would look at a different camera altogether, such as the excellent eyespy247 range.

Unless BT bundle the features you expect from a "Smart Home Cam" for free, this camera is a complete non starter for me.

EDIT 27/10/2014: As per a number of comments left by BT on other reviews it appears they have clarified their position on the premium. They are charging £6.99 per month. I strongly suggest you have a look at the 1080p Full HD Wireless WiFi IP Security Camera with Free Online Recording. Setup in 3 steps with our Free iPhone/iPad/Android apps. Motion Alerts, IR Night Vision, Built-in SD Card DVR, Email Alerts, 95 Degrees Wide Angle Image and more. UCam247i-1080HD.. It is more expensive up front to purchase but has a built in SD card, can transfer automatically to a NAS drive, email alerts, etc etc is all free to use once purchased. Avoid this BT cam if you want anything more than just looking at a live feed.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have been using this camera for around a month now and overall it isn't something I would recommend unless you do not mind paying nearly ten pounds per month for a subscription.

The camera is easy to set up using an Android or Apple phone app, and once the settings have been made, the camera can be accessed via the phone app, or on a computer.

It's possible to ask the camera to start recording via the app, but not (for me at least) when using the pc interface. I also found that the camera needed to be switched off and on at the mains to reset it after about two weeks because it had become unresponsive ... not great if you are away for a few days.

As others have mentioned, this type of security camera is at it's best when it detects motion; automatically records, and sends an email to notify that a trigger has occurred. That's where the problems have started; the camera is detecting car-sized motion (one of the sensitivity settings)when our cat walks past, or worse still when nothing is moving. After 60+ emails and push alerts overnight, I've disabled these features for now. Another point is that whilst checking live video and events on the smartphone is very useful, it does rather eat into one's data allowance so make sure you're on an unlimited plan, or make use of a data-watch app.

The reviewer who mentioned the camera may be detecting clouds, sunlight and shadows is probably spot-on. I have just opted for the two-week free trial and when I look at the triggered events (and there were lots and lots of them last night and this morning) ... nothing, no cars, people or even cats!
