Photo Album of World War I Aces! 19 Sept. 2008
By Michael OConnor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Noted aviation historian Norman Franks offers up a photographic tribute to British and American WWI aces in this evocative 2005 volume from Schiffer Publishing. The book offers a rare glimpse of notable pilots from that long-ago conflict.

Franks devotes the book's first section to photographs and brief service histories of 'The Top Twelve' highest-scoring pilots. He then proceeds down the line with chapters on aces with 39 to 30 kills, 29 to 20 kills, 19 to 14 kills, 13 and 12 kills, 11 and 10 kills, a listing of aces with 9 to 5 kills (no photos) followed by photos and info on American aces that flew with the RFC, RNAS, French Air Service and USAS arranged by number of victories. The concluding section is an alphabetical list of aces.

BRITISH AND AMERICAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I is a fascinating visual record of famous and not-so-famous aces. All the notables are included (Ball, Mannock, Collishaw, etc.) but you also get to put a face to other aces such as Cowper, Fairclough, Luchford, Booker, Leacroft, Dallas, Slater, Howsam, Hoy and Chadwick. The photographic quality of the shots varies from excellent to poor yet the net result is evocative.

World War I enthusiasts will greatly enjoy Franks' book. It's a marvelous time capsule. Recommended.
