5.0 out of 5 stars Great first train set, 10 Mar 2008

Although most Brio is not recommended for children younger than 3 years old, this set is designated as being OK from 18 months old up. We bought it for our son's second birthday, and he absolutely adores it. The pieces all seem very robust, and there is relatively limited scope for him to do much damage with the pieces if he throws a tantrum. For instance the house is made of a soft material. Learning how to run the train on and off the tracks, keep it on the track, run it through the house and use the right magnet on each carriage to connect to the others has proved to be an absorbing exercise in physical and mental dexterity. Apart from the elegant simplicity of the tracks itself, all the pieces are brightly coloured with familiar fruits on the side of the carriages.

Of course, the real beauty of this system is that you can carry on adding track, rolling stock and accessories as the child gets older. Talking of the track, despite it seeming to be a relatively straightforward piece of construction, we have found that other makes of Brio-like track are of noticeably poorer manufacture and in some cases (such as that from Ikea) do not interconnect well. You may well pay more for the Brio brand name, but judging by the quality of this set, it is probably worth the extra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Foundation!, 26 May 2010

Brio train sets and extra components last generations, holding a good resale value. This first set is ideal to gage interest, if desired becoming a sound foundation to expand upon over many years. There is a wonderful variety of extra track, supports, switches, bridges, sheds, turntables and rolling stock available both new and on the second hand market.

This particular set provides:-

1 X small solid wood engine NOT battery operated. There is another first Brio set that is battery operated if preferred.
3 X solid wooden carriages with fruit logos on the sides.
8 X long curved sections of wooden track, wheel grooves carved both sides for maximum track variation.
Two plastic end sections, one Red and one Green for easy track to floor transition.
A fabric tunnel, foam filled with quality vivid printed detail all over.

Track ~ beautifully sanded and untreated, no cracked varnish in future. The double sided sections interlock with ease for small inexperienced hands, giving quickly gained satisfaction for effort. As it doesn't matter which way up each section is laid, the absolute beginner will rapidly gain a real sense of achievement. This also gives the opportunity for a complete circular layout, curvy line and many possibilities in between.

Rolling Stock ~ beautifully sanded with a superb paint finish. All magnets are extremely securely attached. Strong magnetic force, enough to keep the train together along the track and over a bridge we added. One magnet to the rear of the engine and each end of the carriages. Magnet coupled train sets are a fantastic introduction to the magnetic poles too.

We chose this non battery version because it allows imagination to flourish. As purely manual, fine motor skills with hand and eye coordination are practised continually. There is an immense sense of empowerment when 'self body power' causes a train to move with a line of rolling stock behind. The 'little engine driver' has complete constant control with speed. Instant control stopping and starting also which direction when splitter track is added. No frustration when batteries wear out. No expensive batteries to regularly purchase or inconvenience safely disposing of. A battery powered engine could be added in future if desired. Regarding track, some makes interlock very well with Brio. Best take some Brio with you, try before you buy a lot don't.

My daughter had this set for her first Christmas and is now three. It has been added to and kept jumbled together in a sturdy box, when not played hard with. Enjoyed both inside and out, looking at all components there is hardly any play wear. I feel Brio is better made compared to other systems I've looked at. Vintage extremely play worn sets look beautifully aged; bearing evidence of many happy hours spent creating precious childhood memories. Our train is only just beginning the journey...

I really do hope this was helpful to you. A first train set is very special indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great present, 6 July 2010
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: BRIO 33700 My First Railway Set (Toy)
This was what our 2 year old grandson enjoyed most of all his birthday presents. Just like any little boy he loves transport and having a basic set to build on was ideal. No doubt it will be added to at Christmas and beyond. When I used to teach 4-5 year olds, a parent donated an already well used Brio train set. It was a favourite toy with all the children and it stood up to many further years of play by many boys and girls. The magnetic engine and trucks also add to the fun - and educational quality of this set.
