4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous juice, steep learning curve, 30 Aug 2007
The Power Juicer Express is the 'slimline' version of the original Jack La Lanne power juicer but is supposed to have the same effectiveness. This is my first juicer and I keep it on the kitchen bench so that it is easily accessible. The juice itself is gorgeous.

Learning curve - after two weeks and a dozen attempts at juicing, I really feel I have the hang of it. Despite what it says on the JLL website, it really doesn't handle whole fruit such as apples and pears. Now I chop each into quarters and these push through without jamming the motor. Oranges and other citrus fruit you slice off the skin, leaving the pith, and whoosh, out comes this luscious fresh juice. Pear is fabulous, on it's own or with apple, as is pineapple. Strawberries, rasps with orange - mmmmmm - and you don't have to take the stalks out of the strawbs (as I realised part way through!). Carrot, cucumber and celery - yuk. I blame the cucumber. Friends say carrot and orange is good but I've not tried it yet. This morning I had apple and blackberry (picked in my own street). Avoid mixing too many flavours together - stick to two or three.

I was a bit disappointed that banana and avocado were banned - no juice apparently - but you can whiz them into the home made juice afterwards. I use a stick blender for this.

The book says drink straight away and obviously this is best but, because it does take a while to dismantle, it's not worth doing less than about a litre. I have found all the juices keep well for several days in the fridge (if you don't mind the brownish tinge of rapid oxidisation on apple and pear) I use old one litre plastic juice or milk bottles.

Cleaning - I've not found the cleaning anywhere near as much of a hassle as I expected. It's no worse than cleaning the food processor and I actually prefer it to cleaning out the cafetiere. I took note of what people said on here about doing it straight away and that has paid off.

Price - shop around with a vengeance. I bought the juicer new, following a google search, for just £34.99 in July 2007 - between half and one third of prices in online retail outlets. It came in two days.

Disadvantages - what I really don't like about this model is that the cutting blade is held on by a small metal screw which you have to unscrew each time you dismantle it. Yes, you guessed right, I lost it about the third time of using. Luckily I found something from my toolbox to fit! Also, when I was trying to force through the whole apples, the pulp collector kept vibrating off its base causing the motor to cut out and at first I thought I'd damaged the motor.

Tips - prepare all the fruit before you start; have another jug handy as it really does whack out the juice; work near your sink so that you can run the parts straight under the tap.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Healthy Lifestyle Change, 18 Oct 2007
By Bentley (USA and England) - See all my reviews
NOTE: I want to say first that I have the Deluxe Model and was very surprised and concerned after reading some of the reviews. I have not experienced some of the issues described; but will give my honest assessment below and identify the differences between all of the models.

Is it hard for you to eat your vegetables and have enough fruit servings in a day? It was for me; so I decided to buy another juicer. My last juicer had a very small spout and you had to cut up everything before you put it into the juicer; and it was extremely noisy. I got rid of it because it did not measure up.

I purchased the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer and have been very pleased with it. I read the other reviews and I will try to respond to them as well based upon my own experiences. First, for me the juicer that I have has been excellent. I juice fruits and most vegetables. You have to insert soft vegetables followed by hard vegetables for it to work optimally. I have had no problems following the directions which indicate that this works best.

I have made some wonderful drinks with the Power Juicer. Here is one called the Energy Boost Drink which I love:

1 Carrot
1 Celery Stalk
1 Beet Root
Parsley
Lettuce
Watercress
Spinach
3 Tomatoes
Salt To Taste

It is terrific and the machine does an exceptional job with very little pulp at all.

I don't think the machine does as well with grasses. Especially if you are not following them up with a hard vegetable or fruit upon insertion.

However, the following fruits and vegetables have worked well for me (I have used all of these in juices so far):

FRUITS:
Pineapple, Apples, Guava, Papaya, Oranges, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupes, honeydew, limes, lemons, strawberries, grapes and blueberries only if followed by a hard fruit, grapefruit, mangoes, raspberries only if followed by a hard fruit, kiwi, peaches (pitted), pears

VEGETABLES AND HERBS:

Carrots, Celery, Beet Root, Parsley, Lettuce, Watercress, Spinach, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Peppers, Ginger Root, Kale, Fennel Bulb, Horseradish Root, Garlic, Onion, Cilantro, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Lemongrass

I have the Power Juicer Deluxe (I BOUGHT IT IN A STORE - MODEL CALLED DELUXE) and I have now learned that there is a Power Juicer Elite which does even a better job with soft fruits, nuts and soy. In the Elite Model, you can make your own soy milk, almond milk while extracting the juice from the nuts, themselves. You can even put plums, peaches and cherries in whole. For the reviewer who is interested in a more advanced technology to handle the grasses and the soft fruits better, I would recommend spending the extra money and getting the Power Juicer Elite model for its added features and power.

Just be careful to check out which model you are actually getting because there are "slight" differences between them. I did find with the Deluxe model that the lemongrass and the berries if not followed by a hard fruit or vegetable did not work as well. However, the Power Juicer Elite should work well for those looking for soy technology (rice milk, coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk).

ABOUT THE DISHWASHER: I have found the dishwasher to be perfectly safe for all of the components, but I only put them on the top shelf. I would not trust them close to the heating element of the dishwasher. I honestly have put all components in the dishwasher with no problem (only top shelf). In fact, many times I clean the juicer components easily with the sprayer in less than 5 minutes; and it does not seem that difficult for me; although I use it every day and maybe I have gotten use to it. You can also purchase separately from Jack LaLanne a special scrub brush which works extremely well in cleaning the filter very quickly and safely. I would recommend that additional purchase and it can be found on the Jack LaLanne site under Accessories.

So be careful what model you get, the Original is still the best bargain in white (although berry stain can be a problem with white plastic), it also comes in stainless and that in itself may be more expensive. If I wanted to upgrade, I would select the Elite. The original and all of its components are dishwasher safe; but only for the top shelf and not near any heating element. Grasses do not work optimally with the Original and you have to alternate soft fruits followed by hard ones as well. For those folks who are looking for that added power, the Elite should suffice and do an excellent job or look for a wheat grass juicer if that is your focus.

For me, the Original Deluxe is a terrific machine for the price and when I decide to upgrade at some time in the future..I will most likely go for the elite unless a better model is out by then.

I love the product I have and I love the juices.

Hope the above review gives you an idea of which model might work better for you. The Original in white can be found in stores for much much less.

Additionally, you can buy platforms on line so the machine sits higher and then you can use a full size glass; much easier. I also prop mine on a cutting board and that helps too. The platform can also be purchased separately.

Enjoy your raw vegetables and fruits effortlessly. You can have seven raw vegetables a day in a single glass and never have to worry about getting enough vegetables again.

Bentley/2007

3.0 out of 5 stars OK-ish, 18 Mar 2009
By G. Hancock - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My friend has had a Jack Lalanne juicer for some time now and hers is great. This is I went for this make. I had terrible problems as the first 2 were faulty. The distributers were wonderful however, couldn't be more sorry and tried hard to sort the problem out. I now have a working juicer but find it messy so don't use it as much as I should. Disappointing purchase.
