Which title do I choose?

Help your child be the best reader they can! Because children learn to read at vastly different rates it is important that you match the needs of your child with the most appropriate title from the BRAINtastic Reading Success series. Simply choosing a title matched by age may not be the best for your child. Use the following guide to assist you.

Beginning Reader!

Start your child on their reading journey with titles ONE and TWO and let them progress through the carefully structured, step-by-step activities.

Emerging Reader!

Fill in any skill gaps and then develop and broaden their reading skills. Start at titles ONE or TWO and work through the titles to their level.

Struggling Reader!

Start at title ONE and work through the activities in order. Struggling readers often have specific learning gaps and it is vital that these are addressed before progressing to titles TWO, THREE and FOUR.

Power Reader!

Make the most of your child's reading talent by challenging and stimulating them with a diverse range of reading material. Choose a title above their age. For older children, titles FIVE and SIX will enrich their reading lives!

4.0 out of 5 stars Vocabulary and computer skills 22 Aug. 2010
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is the second in the series aimed at children aged 5-7 years old. It basically combines sight and sound in an attempt to maximise learning potential in a fun and interactive way that engages the child. It tries to build connections between letters and sounds and gradually in this way expand reading vocabulary. It loads easily straight out of the box, no complications or hassle.
There are 4 games: Toy Storm, ReBop, Face Maker Guys and Face Maker Girls which are incorporated into a reward-based learning system, where you can vary the amount of work to be done before they can play a reward game. This is apparently compatible with the National Literacy Strategy, but as my daughter is only 4 1/2 I am only using this as a means to engage her productively and also get her acquainted with using a computer.

Have only been using a few days, but so far so good. My daughter is enjoying it, but I think that there may be a novelty factor to that as well! However, it appears to be a constructive tool that will hopefully help the young ones improve their vocabulary as well develop their computer skills.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The format of this application is very simple. The child is given a series of questions/exercises to assess/build their reading skills. These include identifying basic phonics, spelling and reading, as well as following a plot (eg putting pictures in the right order for a story). Mostly these are in the form of multiple choice or simple typing. Following a batch of questions, depending on how the child has performed, they are offered a limited time (e.g., 2 minutes) to play on one of 4 games. When play time is up, the child must complete another cycle of questions to earn more play time.

There is an "administration" function which allows the parent to control the level and choice of questions, should they wish to take a more directive role.

- The exercises seem to be really well judged. My daughter is 5, but at the top end of ability for her age. She found the questions to be challenging, but was able to complete most of them with no help at all (actually, she really impressed me - did not realise how good she was!). They seem to have got the level exactly right as per the curriculum.
- The layout is simple and colourful, with navigation generally well signposted. My daughter was soon finding her way around without help. Her mouse skills are not yet fully developed, but she did not struggle as she has with other software in the past
- There is liberal use of sound files, e.g., reading out words, sounds, etc. This is all done in nice, British voices (hurray!) - no American twang to be heard.
- The 'pavlovian' challenge-and-reward mechanic works very well, and I had to almost drag my daughter away
- The administration functions are good and allow you to tune the child's usage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reading aid 14 Dec. 2010
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
BRAINtastic is a software package that aims to provide fun tasks to teach children reading and comprehension. There are plenty of levels to encompass pre-school to early school years and bonuses unlocked as you play through the games.

With the level 1 package, the first few skill levels were pretty easy and contain more matching puzzles than word games, getting kids to put a similar face or picture on top of another. This level 2 version is a much better fit for my 6 year old, she finds herself challenged by the early stages but the software provides the encouragement to carry on.

As with the first package, the tasks are read out by a narrator in a clear voice and instructions are clearly shown on screen. Some practice with a mouse is required to successfully navigate the menus and answers as many of the games require putting pictures in the right place by dragging them.

The main selling point of this educational software is that it gives kids 3 games to play when they complete a set amount of questions correctly. The games are timed to 2 or 3 minutes and then save the progress so that the children can go back to it after answering more questions. I'd have liked a separate mode where parents can choose to unlock the games independent of the questions though.

The games are pretty simplistic, and the same as level 1; Toy Storm (one letter off Toy Story, I'm sure that's on purpose) lets the children grab toys that walk across the screen and puts them in a box. Rebop is a memory game with a bouncing ball and is probably the better game for children to use their brains. Finally, Face Maker (girl and boy) lets the children make their own faces from a set list of features (think Wii Miis or Avatars).
