5.0 out of 5 stars Nice bit of software - and not too easy! 25 Sep 2010

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
My daughter is doing level 2 maths key skills and to be frank she sometimes struggles. I got this to help her and to be frank when she say it she thought it would be too easy and a walk in the park. How wrong could she be.

Though, technically, this is below her standard the questions are made to make you think and I reckon adults should try it as it is not as easy as you think it is, though it is straightforward . Unlike maths problems it tests you on reading the question. For example and early question was which is the smallest digit in this number sequence.. The number being something like 4581.9. Daughter shrugs knowingly hitting 1 on the keyboard to be told "wrong". Er Dad the computer got this wrong! Looking I explained that she hadn't looked at the number correctly and that .9 is less than 1. She hits that and "Correct answer" is displayed.

There vare rewards for finishing the test - small easy to complete but fun games.

I like this and I would challenge an educated adult to get 90% in all the tests. We all get rather slack in reading and this software makes sure you read to improve your reading skills and also you understand the question and use maths in everyday situations.

Highly recommended. My daughter is currently looking forward to the next maths test and that must be good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent title - but needs better games 6 Sep 2010
By Martin Greenhead TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This game was ordered for my 8 year old son who is starting year 4. He has good maths skills so should have found the title challenging but not too hard.

Installation: Top marks for the inclusion of Mac and PC versions. This meant my son could use it on the family imac rather than my creaking PC (bought before he was born!). No problems encountered, just make sure you have the admin password to make changes).

Starting to play was very simple. Add your child's name, get them to pick an icon, select the level and you're off.

My son was able to get straight in to it, I sat and watched and gave a couple of explanations of phrases he didn't know, but overall he was happy with what he was able to do.

The carrot to do well was that if you get questions right you are able to play a game - more right answers equals more time. This made him play more. The games only last for a couple of minutes and then it's back to the maths. My son liked this challenge and enjoyed doing the sums as he found the games fun.

What was interesting was the next day (having just started back at school) he asked to do some more questions - not because they were easy, more he found them interesting and challenging, and liked the games.

And then on day 3, he actually switched the game element off and did the questions. When I asked why he said he liked doing the maths but the games were getting a bit boring - but he did say he would try them later. He also fed back that the "well done" type messages after each correct answer were annoying (especially the male voice).

All in all a very good package. The questions require thought and a good understanding, working with an adult is recommended to see how they are doing.

Nice, good value package.

4.0 out of 5 stars Learning maths made easy 25 Dec 2010
By Ladybubbles VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I found the BRAINtastic Version 2 Maths THREE (CD-ROM) really good. My nieces have found it an enjoyable way to learn maths. I have now got all the ones in the series; however, I must warn you that the CD's are age specific particularly the first two. However, the latter two are very good for adults as well who would like to learn or improve their mathematical knowledge.

The games are based on a reward system as you complete task. Like the previous reviewer, I don't quite agree with this method of teaching children, it smacks too close to bribery. I would have preferred they had exercises that some were in the form of games that put into practice the maths they are learning.

Having said that, this is not bad software for teaching maths.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Truly Educational 17 Nov 2010
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This product has been used extensively by a 9 year old who found it to be a lot of fun. She found some of the games a little bit difficult but this was because they were for an older year group than the one she is currently in. However, the games stretched her and made her want to try more and made learning maths entertaining. She did not feel like she was doing school work, but was able to use it like any other computer game, and wanted to keep going to get the answers right. I beleive anything which can keep a 9 year old interested in maths has to be a high class product. I, and the 9 year old, would highly recommend this product, and also most others in the series. Well worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good fun but... 15 Mar 2012
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
My review of this product would be very similar to the one I've written for Maths Four, i.e. I accept this idea as a little bit of fun but question its usefulness for long term learning outcomes. I found that traditional methods work a lot better for my son.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Proof is in the Pudding 19 July 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
My wife and I had to take our son out of school a few months ago and academically, he was so far behind that the thought of him doing a SATS test seemed like a mad fantasy. However, the local authority offered to send an exam invigilator to our house and our son sat the exams. To our amazement, he achieved Level Four.

I'm sure there are many reasons why he has made so much progress in a short space of time, but this program was definitely part of the solution. Learning alone, without the distractions and pressures of a classroom environment, our son was able to get to grips with mathematical concepts that had eluded him for a long time.

If only maths had been this fun when I was his age.
