Book Description

Maddy Richards, a young widow, has turned her small farm into livery stables in order to cope with her bereavement. Whilst losing herself through hard and absorbing work with horses she comes to terms with her grief. However, her life is thrown into chaos when her friend Tamsin is killed in a freak riding accident. Maddy, without thinking of the danger, vows to get to the bottom of her friend’s death. In spite of the subsequent turmoil and threats to her own life, she unexpectedly falls in love. The reader is led through the many twists and turns until the cuprit is eventually caught.

The author Bridget Beresford had an idyllic childhood growing up in her grandfather’s home, Michelham Priory, Upper Dicker, East Sussex. However as she grew up life wasn't always a piece of cake. She spent several years married to a Frenchman where she exercised and schooled horses in the great forests of Northern France. On returning to England, Bridget earned her living breaking-in horses, eventing and riding and training point-to pointers. When diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis she eventually had to give up riding. She says, “I couldn’t afford to fall off, it caused too many problems”. She is now a dressage judge, a successful psychometrist for humans and equines, and an Equine Iridologist. Bridget Beresford has also written KNIGHTS WITHOUT ARMOUR, the re-titled edition of Home By Christmas. This compelling adventure story, set in World War I, takes the reader through the traumas and adventures of Andrew Harrington-West, a Captain in the King's Own Cavalry. For this book Bridget joined forces with Major Richard Waygood MBE. He enlisted in the Household Cavalry as a Trooper when he was 16 and left as a Major 30 years later. His wealth of cavalry knowledge and passion for the cavalry throughout the ages adds colour and authenticity to this deep and enthralling novel.

Reviews:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was well written and had a twist at the end that I wasn’t expecting. I look forward to reading her next novel – L.S.

I read this book on holiday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Being a Dressage rider myself I almost thought I recognised some of the characters featured in the novel and loved the twist at the end. For me the ending definitely left a feeling that there is room for a sequel. So if you like an easy read from an author who clearly knows her subject matter then I would highly recommend it. - J.L.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!! 29 Oct. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this book on holiday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Being a Dressage rider myself I almost thought I recognised some of the characters featured in the novel and loved the twist at the end. For me the ending definitely left a feeling that there is room for a sequel with the same main characters (particuarly as Simon obviously works for the 'Special Services' in some form or another!)
So if you like an easy read from an author who clearly knows her subject matter then I would highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit disappointed 19 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read the other reviews I was hoping for a well written, plausible book. Although the plot was interesting and I felt I had to read until the end to find out what happened there were several things that were a bit far fetched and unlikely. There were also a few things that happened around horses that you just wouldnt do. I wont say what as it might spoil the story. Altogether, it was a fair read but not believable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romp along read! 17 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book after seeing it mentioned on Horse And Hound online. I loved it. In fact I only managed to put it down once and read it in two sittings. The plot was a little predictable, I liked that and there were some unseen twists along the way.
Although it is set in an Equestrian environment this should not put off non horsey people. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing 5 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An easy to read story that keeps you guessing to the end. The love story aspect of the book is perhaps a little predictable and obvious. It's not fast paced but at least it has more than one twist and I found that I wanted to keep reading to discover who the murderer was. A good opening to the story which perhaps the rest of the book did not entirely live up to.

A real good read for all horse fans. If you like a book with good characters this is it. The author is an inspiration to all aspiring authors. If you like Bolted you'll also love Counting Stars, a cracking good read with great characters, a good plot and plenty of Irish humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating 27 May 2014

I read this book after a review in H&H. Following directly after a Dick Francis book it was wonderful to read something within the eventing world! The odd noticeable grammar mistake here and there but I carried on reading regardless (as I can't talk about grammar)

Couldn't put this book down. The story really catches your imagination right from the tragic start. Absolutely loved it the whole picture.

2.0 out of 5 stars good storyline but blandly written.
The ideas were good, but the writing is very stiff and the denouement unbelievable. It's very one dimensional and really more of a pony story for grownups than a real mystery. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read
A little too far fetched for me, the characters were all too closely connected. Would you marry your best friends husband?
