If it's not Tamiya then your kit may be junk. That slogan will never be adapted by Tamiya models but it's an absolute true statement.
This kit is extremely well engineered by Tamiya. So, don't let the age fool you. I've seen other companies, like Trumpeteer, come out with armor and the details, instructions, and assembly guides look like they were put together by a drunk. Tamiya has excellent instructions. Did Tamiya actually talk to some former German soldiers in WWII to make this kit. It acts likes like they did.
Fellow modellers, this kit is worth it just for the two soldiers in full winter overcoats. For less than ten dollars in 2011 currency you get two soldiers that can be modified for other dioramas. Squadron.com does not even offer hardly any 1/35 scale figures. So, it is worth it just for the two soldiers marching in full winter gear. Honestly, those two figure are worth ten stars each. If you're makeing a winter diorama it is worth it to get about five or six of these kits, steal the men out of it, and sell the motorcycle kit on the auction site. Yes, this kit is that good.
The motorcycle is typical Tamiya: chrisp. The pieces need little modification and the kit just falls together. What is nice is the spokes of the motorcycle are hardly overscale. Watch the painting of the wheels else you'll end up with spoke covered with too much paint. Use thinner and an airbrush. Note, the German Army used the motorcycles like the US Army used Jeeps: you see them every where. I don't know of any after market carts and these motorcycles used carts all the time. Use this book as a reference in painting and construction: Bmw Motorcycles in World War II: R12/R75 (Schiffer Military History)
The painting guide on the box and instructions is worth twice the money. Now, Tamiya put this kit out in the 1970s and I challenge anybody to find any painting errors dispite nearly 40 years of research.
This kit is a solid 5 stars. The German soldiers in Winter Gear are correct for 1941 to 1942. That means these figures are perfect for 1st or 2nd year in the Soviet Union.
