4.0 out of 5 stars Dixon twisting bad times into good reads 26 Jan. 2014
By Shawn D. Hilton - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Chuck Dixon, better known for his comic writing, continues to hit center mass with his action adventure tales in bullets and time travel.

The second in a series of books featuring the adventures of ex Rangers and two sibling scientists tampering in and with time. Blood Red acts as a direct sequel to the first Bad Times book, and follows the characters after they realize they can turn their last op into a payday of legendary proportions.

Chuck Dixon handles the initial opening with a deft hand that quickly reminds you of why you enjoyed the initial entry in the Bad Blood series, and by the time he closes the book on this freshmen effort he has opened up a world with much more vast possibilities. Not only does Dixon expand upon the overall setting for Bad Blood, but he manages to figure out a way to do a spin off series
based on the actions of the first book. These new twists and turns, while both interesting and exciting , does take the adventure in a direction that doesn't feature as much of the Ranger team as I would have preferred, but the twist ending caught me completely off guard, and did surprise me.

While Blood Tide definitely has a satisfying ending there is still much more story to be covered from this tale, and I hope we see more sooner than later in regards to some of the unanswered questions that are still adrift.

For fans of the alpha male action genre your going to enjoy the latest bit of Bad Blood. Chuck Dixon fans are
going to get a nice prose dose of his work, and fans of historical sea battles will get as much as they can handle. As for this reader I hope Mr. Dixon gives us his take on a Edgar Rice Burroughs inspired Ranger trapped in the past mixed with some John Carter and a touch of The Land Forgot. Regardless of what Mr. Dixon writes next I will be eager to read it.
5.0 out of 5 stars It grabs you and it won't let you go 1 Nov. 2014

Chuck Dixon creates people you care about who get into situations you worry about and it all happens without a moment's pause in the rapid speed of his story. He knows how to tell a story.

Since I read the first book in this series and this is number two, it's difficult for me to judge the extent to which "Blood Red Tide" would be able to stand alone for a reader unfamiliar with the previous work. My guess, however, is that if you were reading this as a stand-alone book you would do just fine with it.

Dixon's former Rangers (who should not be called "ex-Rangers") team up with the Tauber brother-and-sister science team in this tale and travel back to "the Then" to experience the past in the Greek Mediterranean as no one has ever done before. But if you're going to have a time-travel adventure it wouldn't hurt to throw a few twists into the story, right? Many of the twists take place in "the Now," the present day from which the adventurers begin their travel. There is a mysterious character whose identity and purpose will throw you off guard. And in this tale about travel into the past, there is also a link to the future that will surprise you. Throughout all this, the main characters are caught up in constant action and the pace never slackens.

The wrong writer could easily make a mess of this story. Chuck Dixon is the right writer. He knows how to shape this tale in a way that grabs us, forces us to reach for the next page, and holds us all the way through to the surprises at the end.

If you haven't discovered this author and these characters, you must.
5.0 out of 5 stars Who says you can't get what you want?? 24 Mar. 2015
By Claudette - Published on Amazon.com

Another good one from Dixon. Spoiler for those who don't want to know what the books about.

This one starts with Morris and Caroline Tauber who are on the run. Of course they have loads of money so its not difficult to stay off the grid.

The Taubers do need more money though as they want to rebuild the Tube but to do that they need lots more money. A plan begins to take shape.

Roenbach, Hammond, Chaz and Jimbo are also keeping on the downlow. They all made millions off the last op and they have all fallen off the grid.

Caroline contacts Dwayne and he and Jimbo go with them to the site of the cave where they all fought for their lives one hundred thousand years ago. Caroline knows gold is in the cave and she hopes its never been found.

The gold is there and the crew digs it out and finds a buyer for it. Its gold that will fund a new tube.

    So begins another great read.

This one has Dwayne, Caroline, Jimbo, Hammond, Chaz, Morris, the Iranian nuclear physicists, Sir Neal, his men, a trip to find more gold, a recon missioin on a Greek Island, a ship that will be their base and a home to a new tube, a mysterious man named Samuel, Caroline and Dwayne taken prisoner, the two of them in a fight for their lives, pirates, stolen gold, those looking for the pirates and one more kick ass read by Dixon.

Loads of laughs in there as well. Five Stars and then some.
5.0 out of 5 stars More ambitious! More subplots! More adventure! More, please! 3 Oct. 2014
By Michael G. Hutchison - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition
The rule with sequels, as Joe Bob Briggs once said, is that you're supposed to make the exact same thing over and over. If Chuck Dixon followed that rule, this would just be another tale of the head of the Tauber operation getting the Army Rangers to go back through that same Tube to the same place to rescue hostages again, only this time it's a different era. And it would be fun, sure.

Instead, having established the premise and the characters, Chuck smashes the scenario and sets his characters upon a new course. Now they have to rebuild their time machine, find a way to move it in time and space, and deal with the fallout from the fact that they can never travel earlier than the last time travel attempt. Meanwhile, more is revealed about the financiers of the original Tauber Tube, the nature of the alternate timelines created is explored...and one of the characters must hide a horrible secret revealed when they excavate the ruins of their previous adventure. The payoff to that plot thread I won't spoil, only to say it's a fantastic bit of writing. Get this book. And the next one! And I just learned what's going to happen in Book 4; preorder that one, too!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great combo of sci-fi, historical adventure and military action 26 Dec. 2014
By Chuck Minsker - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The “Bad Times” series is a terrific combination of science fiction, historical adventure and military action all rolled into one fast-paced novel. The first volume established the rules of time-travel for an odd mix of scientists, engineers and former Soldiers. Now cut off from their sponsor, the team must carve its own path, and that begins with a journey to the Mediterranean and a hunt for a long-lost treasure. That hunt lands the team in the middle of a different kind of warfare, and a desperate fight for survival. The story features some shocking twists and turns along the way, and makes smart use of its premise. One of the many things I like about the series is (perversely enough) that the modern-day explorers / fighters keep underestimating their ancestors. Considering the unforgiving world they lived in, we should give them a little more credit - and this series spells that out in spades. A heck of a fun ride - now I can’t wait to read the third volume!
