Black and Decker GK1000-GB 550w Alligator Powered Lopper

The 550w Alligator powered lopper from Black and Decker is a revolutionary cutting tool with chainsaw cutting performance in an easy to use and much less intimidating form. Designed like a manual lopper the GK1000 is lightweight and easy to use, whilst the unique jaws and operating handles offer controlled cutting. The lopper’s scissor action allows for fast, easy cutting and is great for pruning trees and shrubs.

Power and Performance
product

The Alligator Powered Lopper jaws offer the ultimate in controlled cutting. This cutting tool has a large cutting capacity (10cm jaw length) which makes light work of branches and logs up to 4"/10cm. The rugged metal guard protects the jaws from damage, whilst the auto oil feature ensures a fully lubricated chain reducing any chance of breakage.

Innovative Design
product

The design allows the user to use the tool in the same way as a manual lopper but with the added power and cutting performance of a chainsaw. The lopper style dual switch handles provide optimal control and comfort. The lightweight design and fully enclosed bar and chain makes it much easier to handle compared to a standard chainsaw. The rugged metal guards that cover the jaws protect you from the cutting chain and immediately cover the blades once the cut is complete.

Main Uses and Applications
product

The Alligator Powered Lopper works like a manual lopper however its chainsaw likeness expands its capabilities. The tool can be used to easily prune trees back and remove stubborn branches. The jaws also allow the user to safely cut larger branches down to a smaller size, these logs can then be used for wood burners or just for easier disposal.

Safety
product

It is important to remember to wear the appropriate safety equipment such as approved safety gloves or goggles (available separately). This ensures full protection for the user against any loose debris that may move towards you. Remember to make sure the branch or log you want to cut is not too big for the lopper as this may damage the jaws. Avoid stretching for out of reach branches to cut as this also may cause injury.

My local DIY store was selling these loppers off, so I bought one with a veiw to clearing a hedge area in my garden. I used it solidly for two days cutting a series of branches upto about 3 inches. This cutter made the job very simple and much easier than cutting by hand. As with any chain based cutter you need to oil and tighten the blade periodically and this is a really simple process.

The best feature is the clamps which also cover the blade, this gives a real feeling of safety because it makes it very hard to access the blade during use. It also has the added benefit of reducing the chippings given off, but I suggest that you still wear the safety gear.

The two handle design is also comfortable during use and I found it very light. It's and all round good piece of kit.

I am usualy wary of wacky looking garden equipment and prefer conventional tools. However this uniquie product really impressed me with its ease of use and fast clean cutting ability. Most of all it feels really safe to use - unlike most chainsaws which often cause the user to break out in a sweat or worry about chopping a limb off.

The Alligator jaws clamp around the branch and then only when you have pressed the 2 safety switches (one on each handle) the saw quickly cuts through branhces up to 4 inches. I found the cut was actualy cleaner if you used less pressure on the handles. Having 2 switches means the blade will only work when your hands are away from the dangerous parts and if you drop it or lose grip it will stop instantly.

Although the Alligator weighs about 4kg it is well balanced and does not feel heavy. If you dont have the stamina for prolonged sawing or want a fast easy job this is the tool for you.

Having owned the impressive battery operated equivalent for some time, and used it to cut down trees much bigger than the cited 4 inches (just rotate the jaws around the base) I decided to buy the mains powered one too. This model works as well as the battery one, but with slightly different strengths which you don't really notice unless you use them together. The battery one is easier to use with smaller branches, but the mains one seems to be slightly better with larger ones. I agree with one of the other reviewers who said that the chain can pop off easily if not kept tight, this seems to happen more with the mains powered one than the battery one, possibly because the battery runs out before the chain slackens anyway? They are both capable of taking down small trees, branches and hedges easily and safely. If you need to cut a lot of branches, go for the mains one, if it's just "occasional" use or you don't have mains access use the battery one, neither will disappoint.

With a piece of dangerous looking equipment like this, the first thing I did was look for the instructions. There weren't any. Just a thick booklet in a multitude of languages as usual, and a few line-drawings of the item with arrows and numbers pointing to individual components - but with no description or explanation of what they were for. No matter, as the immediate job in hand was taken care of in a similarly immediate and HIGHLY EXCITING way.

Despite protective gloves, leggings and helmet with visor, I still winced as I clasped it around the most offending tree-limb in the over-grown garden and squeezed the triggers. Brrrrrr... straight through in 2 or 3 seconds. I then proceeded to fight every errant growth on the plot, accompanied by whoops of delight. I laughed demonically as each offending arboreal intruder was felled without a fight. My (famed) Dalek "Exterminate" and "Destroy" imitations rang out
in the garden. A truly wonderful afternoon - with just me and my new Alligator.

No "instructions" necessary when you're having fun.

Alas, the only problem now, is getting rid of what I've cut down. The professional Shredders are fully booked until the end of May. Anyone got links to a Military-Grade Flame-Thrower for sale?

Excellent piece of kit, not too heavy and was great for cutting down medium size leylandii. Ensure jaws are engaged before cutting otherwise chain comes off and a bit fiddly to refit. Does exactly what is says on the box.

I bought this item to tackle a terribly overgrown hedge.

It is great. I have no problem using it myself. It cut through branches as thick as my arm with ease. But most of all I did not feel frightened of it.

This is a great item but the motor died after I had had it for a year. Took it for repair but would have been very expensive. The repair guy said that the motor in the loppers was rather small for the work that it was expected to do.

Changed star rating from to 5 to 3.

I found the lopper a safe tool although it incorporates a chain saw. Both hands are occupied when in use so it is difficult to harm yourself. The only thing to remember is to ensure you are cutting, i.e. chain closing from above, if not the branch you are cutting closes on the saw and grips it and you may find difficulty freeing it.

Bought one of these last week as I want to cut down some 10 year old leylandi in the garden ++ a whole lot of overdue pruning. I am in complete admiration for this product.. the phrase " cuts like butter " is not out of place. It fastens on to the branches and effortlessly cuts through them. It's a very compact tool and completely safe and enclosed..I am going to have a great summer filling my " brown bin " every 2 weeks. Manual loppers and saws can be put aside -- this is all I need to get my garden back under control. Buy one !!! You will have fun...
