Bjorkademia 7 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw this but was curious as the author is currently part of the Biophelia collaboration. Nicola Dibben is an academic and this is definitely how she approaches Bjork and her work. At times a little dry for me,but then again I've recently read 'Wow & Flutter' by Mark Pytlik which is a more straight forward look at her work. Dibben's book offers a wider context, particularly with regard to Bjork's Icealandic identity. As a result, I was prompted to obtain Bjork's 'Family Tree' which is frequently referred to in the book in terms of Bjork's evolution as an artist.

Great analysis 15 Jun 2010

This is a unique book, no doubt. The author has really given me some interesting perspectives on Björk's music. She travels to the depths of many aspects in the artist's albums and songs, as well as using things outside of the music production, to make her case about what the different albums and songs represent and how they came to sound the way they do. Basically, the author's main objective is to illuminate to us how things in the artist's life and her environment affect the music she makes. She succeeded, and her theories are impressive. The author's theories on the symbolism found in Björk's music are quite interesting.
As a musician and a fan of the artist, this was an important read. I recommend you read this if you love her music, for you will obtain understandings that can't derive from any other book. You can't fully understand her music without understanding how her environment shapes it with each album.
