5.0 out of 5 stars A superb read - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED., 9 Oct 2007

This review is from: BILLY BRAY IN HIS OWN WORDS PB (Paperback)
This book is a superb read and highly recommended.

The author has trawled through Billy Bray's unpublished journal from 1864 - a 49,000 word one sentence, which has now been grammar-tised, translated (where necessary) and interpreted! And F. W Bourne book about Billy Bray and has cross referenced the various editions for changes - most intriguing. The author also quotes from other lesser known antiquarian books to give other authors comments about their time with Billy.

The author has quoted from numerous sources and has put all the known facts together from Billy's life into one complete book.

Also, there are many explanations at to what words mean, many of which are Cornish or from the mining industry, which would mean nothing to the common man, except for this hard research.

The author has visited the places that are connected to Billy's life and so is not writing from a distance, but has been able to get a feel for the geography is which Billy moved and ministered.

The author has really got inside the head and heart of Billy Bray and explains many of Billy's saying, to what he means then and not what he words or phrases mean today.

If you could buy one book on Billy Bray, this must be it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!, 2 Jan 2010

AG PHILLIPS "An Bucca" (Cornwall) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: BILLY BRAY IN HIS OWN WORDS PB (Paperback)
The 19th century Methodist lay preacher William `Billy' Bray is the most widely known and loved Cornish Christian of modern times. Billy Bray was a hard-drinking tin miner who neglected his family before his conversion in 1823. Afterwards, however, he was to become a tireless and fearless evangelist and an icon of Cornish Methodism.

Chris Wright has patiently transcribed Bray's often chaotic and practically indecipherable 49,000 word journal and presented it in its entirety in a book for the first time, a labour of love which puts Cornwall very much in his debt. Wright skilfully places excerpts of Bray's journal in the context of other accounts of events in Bray's life, thereby adding depth and detail. The result is a fascinating window into the faith of this great man and the times he lived in.

Bray firmly believed God was deeply involved in everyday events, interacting with people of faith to achieve his will in the world. For Bray there was no question God did not answer prayer, so there was no question the advance of God's kingdom could ever be frustrated, but only so long as Christians remained totally committed to him. In these respects, Bray was no different from the brave Celtic saints who evangelised Cornwall 1200 years before.

Today mainstream Methodism in Cornwall is a sad shadow of its former self as seen in its glory years, evangelism now being carried out mainly by the more confident and energetic Transatlantic variety represented by the Life and Light Church. If the former has much to learn from the latter about the importance of initiative and commitment, all of Cornwall's Methodists will gain much from reading about this endearing, effervescent Christian, whose ministry proved devastatingly effective despite all his eccentricity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Billy Bray, 30 Aug 2010

I really enjoyed reading this book. I learned so much more about Billy Bray from Chris Wright's transcription of Billy's journal. It is also historically significant to me in that I am a decendant of Billy's. Chris Wright, keep up the good work.
