DAZED AND CONFUSED 20 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
I really want to love The Big Pink more then i actually do.Their first album A Brief History Of Love was ok but no way as strong as the press or the band themselves suggested. In the first flush of hype things certainly looked promising,Robbie and Milo have the hipster look down pat, hoxton haircuts, impeccable taste, cool reference points.
But along with the electronica there we're very average, dare i say it mediocre lumpen ballards that directly oppossed their glacial cool.
But you know when i invest in a band i try to be actively interested for longer then the 30 seconds afforded bands nowadays. The circle of hype in constant orbit.Future This in my opinion is a more solid effort then the debut.
Big Pink are definetly covering the market in melodic electronica ballards Stay Gold,1313 and Jump Music attest to this.
I did grit my teeth at a couple of the lyrical cliches and there are limitations to Furzes vocals, just not quite hitting the crescendos.BUT i like a band who feel no shame in attempting to write big fat choruses,a band which could easily disappear up their artistic backsides doing shoddy imitations of cooler bands.
There seems a detectable musical desire to be honest and reach for the bigger things,Rubbernecking epitomises this opinion. There is a real contradiction between the image of The Big Pink and their music.
Image wise its all edgy, music wise...well rather nice, commercial persil white arena rock. There is hints of Duran Duran{Lose Your Mind} Automatic era Jesus And Mary Chain,Depeche Mode{77}.Big Pink fans will love Future This and i think the band may be able to make a few moves in America who adore the british 80s new wave. There are momments when Big Pink hit great heights, bizarrely mostly on the outros of songs, real stonking beats hinting at a far, more aggressive experimental tone. Also there is a much more euphoric optimism to these songs.
So more a case of goodwill towards Big Pink then reverence,i would much prefer The Pink then other commercial boil in the bag Top Shop indie bands The Kooks or Hard Fi.Love the artwork of the album sleeve, very Dazed And Confused.

By Paul M VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The Big Pink's latest album is a bit of a conundrum.

Firstly it's an accomplished set of fine synthesised pop with enough melodies and hooks to fuel an entire career. On the other hand it has a distinctly retro sound and approach, that almost disregards 30 years of electronic music innovation, meaning that the album somehow sounds locked in a 1982 time warp.

This is fine when the songs are as good as the opening brace, Stay Gold, and Hit the Ground [Superman], but the feeling I get is theres a slight reluctance to really experiment, meaning that The Big Pink sound more like the natural heirs to say,Blancmange, rather than hipper acts like early OMD or Depeche Mode. This is not necessarily a problem, because The Big Pink are more than capable of evolving into a subtle experimental unit [ they've already proved they can write the tunes or cleverly sample when necessary], its just that safety first in songwriting is not always the right way forward for a band with their potential, and when they occasionally dip their toes in accoustic instrumentation or somethig offbeat the results are discreetly pleasing

Still Future This is a confident album, that has been given a very effective pop sheen by Alan Moulder, and should sell well given the success of Hurts and their ilk.

Lose Your Mind 22 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
First of all, I loved their debut album A Brief History of Love, but this is just so much more better. For a start it is more consistent throughout, e.g I don't think there is a weak song on the whole album, and if there had to be one then it would probably be Give It Up as it just doesn't quite jump out at you like the others. The first two tracks are Stay Gold and Hit the Ground (Superman) which you may have seen the videos for on youtube. These songs are good solid songs the kick off the proceedings. Next is the albums "weak link" Give it Up which I can see has Hip-Hop influences in the drum beat. Next are three brilliant songs in a row. The Palace, 1313 and Rubbernecking. The Palace is just an awesome song, it has retained the sort of sound that was found on the bands first album much like 1313 has, its sort of less fuzzy version of Velvet. Then we have Rubbernecking which is just screaming out to be the next single which the catchy chorus and synth hook. These songs were made for stadiums. The next three songs Jump Music, Lose your Mind and Future carry on the solid consistency and Lose your Mind is another brilliant sing a long. The final track 77 is an emotional song about the loss of the singers brother 3 years ago. It is an amazing and chilling end to a superb album.

Download "The Palace", "1313", "Rubbernecking", "Lose Your Mind" and "77"
