Product Description

Book Description

The Old Testament is God's biography, the story of his passionate encounters with people and also a prequel to the story of Jesus. This book explores the sometimes shocking and cryptic writings in an effort to know God better.

From the Back Cover

Philip Yancey has a way of confronting our most cherished but misguided notions about faith. In The Bible Jesus Read, he challenges the perception that the New Testament is all that matters and the Old Testament isn’t worth taking the time to read and understand.

Yancey admits that, like many Christians, he usually avoided the Old Testament. After all, why bother with writings that can be so baffling, boring, even offensive to the modern mind?

But a surprising discovery awaited Yancey when he began to explore how the Old Testament related to his life today. Those seemingly irrelevant Hebrew Scriptures took on a startling immediacy, portraying a passionate relationship between God and people against the broad backdrop of human experience. Like nothing else, the Old Testament depicts the cries, the complaints, the deep, insistent questionings of the heart, the stuff of life we all must contend with.

With his candid, signature style, Yancey interacts with the Old Testament from the perspective of his own deeply personal journey. From Moses, the amazing prince of Egypt, to the psalmists’ turbulent emotions and the prophets’ oddball rantings, Yancey paints a picture of Israel’s God--and ours--that fills in the blanks of a solely New Testament vision of the Almighty.

Probing some carefully selected Old Testament books--Job, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets--Yancey reveals how the Old Testament deals in astonishing depth and detail with the issues that trouble us most. The Old Testament in fact tackles what the New Testament often only skirts. But that shouldn’t surprise us. It is, after all, the Bible Jesus read.

The Bible Jesus Read will give you abundant new insights into the heart of God the Father. And as you read with a fresh eye the prayers, poems, songs, and bedtime stories that Jesus so revered, you will gain a profound new understanding of Christ. "The more we comprehend the Old Testament," Yancey writes, "the more we comprehend Jesus."

The author of the book is clearly a devout Christian who has been brought up as a Christian, in a Christian family. However most Christians are likely to find this book challenging as it faces up to the old testament...the Bible Jesus read.
First under the spotlight is the book of Job, which seriously questions the whole foundation of our relationship with God. Could we still have faith in God even if we suffered terrible loss and injury? What are the terms and conditions of our faith; are we really prepared to accept God on God's terms?
Next a look at God through the eyes of Moses in Deuteronmony. Followed by the difficult Psalms, written by those who felt abandoned by God. Finally a look at Ecclesiastes and the Prophets.
I have never met a Christian able to properly admit to let alone address the difficult questons raised by the Old Testament. Therefore this is quite a remarkable book. An excellent and worthwhile read which will surely be an inspiration to many people in their search for a deeper understanding of God.

This book delivers in true Philip Yancey style a rare and honest look at the reading of the Old Testament. This book could not have come out at a more opportune time for me as I had just completed reading the OT for the first time! I was left feeling confused, shocked, frightened and overwhelmed at times. Reading the OT made me realize I had created an image of God not true to what the Bible presents in the OT. The Bible Jesus Read made me feel it was o.k. to have the questions and struggles I experienced and that I was not alone in my feelings. Churches seem to conveniently avoid and shy away from the difficult issues and passages as if "embarrassed" by them. It was refreshing to find a book that dealt honestly and openly with the OT issues/situations that I don't believe God wants us to overlook. Yancey's book encourages the questioning, struggling and meditating of God's Word, even if answers are not always found in the manner we want them to be. It was encouraging and comforting to see Yancey's faith in God through Christ maintained throughout the periods of doubt and questioning we all have in our spiritual growth. The only problem I have with Yancey's work is that I wish he was more prolific in getting more books out.

A Must Read! 15 May 2002
Format:Paperback
Yancey has attempted to answer some of the questions that other writers had avoided. He was honest - but witty in giving a fresh appeal to the Old Testament. As I am very sure that most Christians can identify with his past struggles and doubts and questions, I am also certain that many will welcome his insightful explainations. His book opens with "Is the Old Testament Worth The Effort?" I am glad to say that by the end of the book, you will answer with a resounding yes!
