Book Description

14 Dec 1998 0201379511 978-0201379518 1
BGP4 (Border Gateway Protocol version 4) is the de facto standard inter-domain routing protocol deployed in the Internet today. As the means by which Internet destinations are communicated between subscribers and service providers, BGP4 provides a critical function for Internet operations. Whether you are associated with an Internet service provider or are a system administrator at an organization whose business depends heavily on the Internet, a background in BGP4 is essential. BGP4: Inter-Domain Routing in the Internet provides a practical introduction to the TCP/IP protocol suite and to routing in general. This concise guide describes the BGP protocol in clear terms and explains messages and rules for processing information through the protocol. In addition to illustrating low-level details of the protocol, the author examines the conceptual way that BGP works in practical networks, the way that BGP4 interacts with other parts of a network, and other details important to its operation. This book also covers the many extensions that have been made to the original specification to increase the protocols' usability and scope of operation. Specifically, you will find coverage of such key topics as: * IP base protocol, including the packet formats, addressing and routing, and other protocol rules * Autonomous systems and the distinction between IGPs and EGPs * Distance Vector versus Link State Routing Protocols * CIDR and how it relates to BGP4 * Operational details essential to using BGP * BGP message types, path attributes, and the route selection process * Singly homed and multihomed subscribers * BGP interaction with IGP * Internal BGP scaling * TCP MD5 authentication * Other extensions to the protocol In addition, this book offers a revealing look into how large ISPs work with BGP4, including a discussion on aggregation, filtering transit customers, and public interconnect points. Numerous real-world examples throughout the book demonstrate concepts and implementation techniques. 0201379511B04062001

Product Description

From the Publisher

1st book in a new series
BGP4 is the first book in a new series from Addison Wesley - the Addison Wesley Networking Basics Series. This book is a short, step-by-step guide to working with the protocol BGP4 (Border Gateway Protocol version 4). Reviewers of this manuscript raved about the writing style and the conciseness of the book.

From the Author

A concise and practical guide to BGP
BGP has gone from an obscure protocol known by a relatively small number of people to a frequently heard acronym in just a few years. Not everyone uses BGP in their own network or over their access circuit to their Internet service provider. However, organizations that do need to use BGP are sometimes hard-pressed to learn both basics and esoteria--the documents written by the Internet Engineering Task Force are intended for programmers implementing the protocol and other texts either only deal with BGP in a cursory way or in a vendor-specific way. This book tries to balance completeness and simplicity, so it is very approachable in introducing terminology, concepts and "gotchas" in such a way that the reader can move from the text to actually being involved in the configuration and operation of BGP without thinking that it's "black magic" and instead actually understanding the purpose of each knob in the configuration.

Many people learn BGP with the baptism-by-fire approach. I'm certainly one of those people and I know what a frustrating experience it can be. I hope that this book helps minimize that period for others.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thick stew of serious technical content. 12 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I have this love-hate relationship with writers of technical books and their publishers. On the shelves, my eyes are drawn to the 500+ page tomes, but when I take a peek I am more often disappointed than elated with watered down, stretched out pap. Mr. Stewart breaks out from the pack with a seriously dense work that is nonetheless eminently readable.

Don't be fooled by the tiny size of this book- it is huge. It covers its subject thoroughly and concisely. You can use it as a reference or a tutorial. It reads well and it works. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise Intro to BGP4 20 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
As the title suggests, this book is about BGP4, period. Don't expect a big discussion about anything else. There is an obligatory intro to internet routing and TCP/IP, but that's not the focus of the book. What it is is a great first book on BGP for anyone looking to use multiple ISPs for corporate internet access, or looking to implement BGP4 on larger corporate intranets.

The description of the BGP4 routing protocol is extremely detailed and would probably serve as an excellent reference guide. There are enough examples to give you a pretty good idea of how BGP is used, but if you're looking to create your own autonomous system(s), you'll need more information. Check out Bassam Halabi's book - Internet Routing Architectures and talk to your ISPs routing experts. btw: Halabi's book focuses on Cisco's implementation of BGP4 and includes lots of example configs, but that's fine since the internet is dominated by Cisco anyway.

I found this book to be excellent and recommend it to anyone who is interested in implementing BGP4 in their network, or to anyone who just wants to expand their knowledge base. The book is short but that's a positive attribute in this case. Kudos to Mr. Stewart.

5.0 out of 5 stars less ZZZZZZs than Halabi 25 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
though the definitive guide is Halabi, Stewart has hit the subject in a clear concise manner. I found it an interesting afternoons read. Certainly, did a good job on IP introduction, I didn't have to read the same intros, I think if we needed a full description of the TCP/IP, I consider Comer would suffice.
