5.0 out of 5 stars His best yet 27 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read all of Neil White's crime novels to date and I have to say this is his best yet. I bought it on the strength of the previous stories involving the reporter Jack Garrett and his detective partner Laura McGanity and expected it to be on the same basis. However we are treated to new protagonists in DI Sheldon Brown and lawyer Charlie Barker in a tightly woven storyline that cleverly brings together seemingly different strands into a satisfying denouement. The setting is very familiar if you've read the previous books - a former industrial town in Lancashire that has seen better days - and I think this adds to the realism in today's Britain. Towns which are a shadow of their former industrial glory seem to be commonplace and you can feel the honesty and reality in the background descriptions. As far as the story was concerned I found it compelling, well-written and I didn't want to put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous gripping read 26 Sep 2012

I am a self confessed book addict!! I read all sorts but this really was one of my all time favourite reads, gripping from the start with lots of plot twists and turns and excellent believable characterisation. I am going to buy all of Neil Whites books now and this is by far the best crime novel I have read in a long time. I was getting so bogged down by boring predictable reads and this book has restored my faith in great hard working authors who deserve to be recognised.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best 14 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read all of Neil White's books to date and found them all worthy of 5 stars. Unfortunately, I didn't have a Kindle when I read them so I can't comment on the digital version, but everything being equal, the writing style and the story are excellent. I suppose everyone has a few favourite authors from whom they look out for new stories - Neil is certainly near the top of my list. This one is definitely worth more than the current price of 99p.
Notice it's now £1.99 - good for you Neil, sorry readers!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible page turner 1 Oct 2012

I chose this book on the basis of the recommendations of other readers and I certainly wasn't disappointed. From the first chapter I was unable to put it down - I guess I finished the book inside 5 sessions it was such a cliff hanger. Dealing the law on a professional basis I found the plot credible (which is more than I can say for some books)More of the same please!

4.0 out of 5 stars Page turner 10 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Was drawn into the story right from the beginning. I found that I just wanted to keep on reading as the plot was very intriguing. The characters involved were quite dark troubled souls but this only added to the dark atmosphere of the plot. Would have no hesitation in recommending this as a brilliant thriller.

2.0 out of 5 stars just too much... 9 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got this book after reading other books from Neil White, the series of Jack and Laura. I was really disappointed with this one: whilst the first series was light with humour but with good plots, this one had too many horrible descriptions, horrible and crazy people, even the heroes were depressing... no humour, all very deep - too unrealistic. Good plot but not pleasant at all.

Neil White has written quite a few novels, and I think it shows in this one. There's a few interesting variations, but it still feels more like the plot of an ITV drama than a really innovative thriller. The characters are believable, but recognisable from dozens of other books in the genre; the washed-up defence solicitor; the alcoholic police detective; you've met them all before.

Worth reading, certainly some bits you'll remember for a while, but not enough to bring it to the top of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another compelling thriller 13 Jun 2012
By ACB(swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Detective Sheldon Brown takes on the case of a murdered body (Alice Kenyon). The main suspect is brutally murdered Billy Privett, a lottery winner, dissected by a pyschopath. Who the perpetrator is lies in the hands of a struggling lawyer, Charlie Parker. DI Brown undercovers a world of secrets and cults.
The novel is compelling. It keeps the interest throughout.
Murders occur as do survivors. Read and enjoy.
