For a modern wrestling fan, used to "big name" matches on a weekly basis on free-TV, it's impossible to imagine what a breath of fresh air Saturday Night's Main Event was, pitting as it did the big names against each other. This DVD set, however, does manage to convey just how important the show was and how it's success meant a hell of a lot to the WW(F)E.

Of course being from the time period that it is (1985-1992 for the most part) this is not the DVD to find clean finishes and superb-technical matches. If it's characters, enetertainment and a spontaneous feel of action that's largely missing from the modern era then this most certainly is the DVD for you.

Backstories are told by the wrestlers themselves, which makes this far more than a mere compilation of matches, and this, along with Gene Okerlund's introductions, effectively conveys the issues at hand and give the matches historical context.

Disc 1 contains the still bizarre sight of Hulk Hogan facing off against Terry Funk, some typically intense action from Jake "The Snake" Roberts and the always welcome sight of the Hart Foundation clashing with the British Bulldogs (even if the "finish" is insulting).

Disc 2 can seem like an overdose of Hulk Hogan at times, although his Steel Cage match with the Big Boss Man is worth a watch. Once again it's tag team action, in the form of The Rockers Vs The Brainbusters, which provides the best action.

Disc 3 again sees some killer tag team action (pitting The Rockers against The Hart Foundation this time) and some entertaining Mr. Perfect action alongside some minor gems from the early 90's in the form of Bret Hart Vs Ted DiBiase and Undertaker & Ric Flair Vs Hulk Hogan & Sid.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best WWE dvd to date!!!!!!!!!!! 18 Jan 2010
My absolute favourite wwe dvd release, long before the monday night wars "Saturday Night's Main Event" was the tv programme to watch (as well as Primetime Wrestling). this dvd has so many great matches nearly all of these matches would be a ppv main event nowadays, the star of this release is without a doubt the Macho Man Randy savage who is at his peak here in classic matches against Bret Hart, Ted Dibiase, Jake"the snake"Roberts, and his legendary match with the Honky Tonk Man (which created his "Mega Powers" partnership with Hulk Hogan).
There are some great tag-team matches which include, The Rockers vs The Brainbusters, and the Hart Foundation vs The British Bulldogs both in 2 out of 3 falls. Hulk Hogan has some of his biggest matches on these discs, vs Paul Orndorff and vs the Big Bossman in steel cage matches, and the infamous twin referree's in the title defense against Andre The Giant.
But without a doubt in my mind the best match here is the Intercontinental Title Match between Mr Perfect and Tito Santana, this match has it all, coming second is the Bret Hart vs Ted Dibiase which could've been so much better if it was'nt for a cheap finish.
The "new" additions to the SNME franchise is not worthy of joining the classic stuff, but on the whole this is a MUST for any fan of the "cartoon" era of the wwe, I just hope they follow with a sequel as there are loads more fantastic matches not yet released.

While Monday Night Raw has become the longest running wrestling show in history, The show that really started it all for WWE was Saturday Night's Main Event, featuring pay per view quality matches and some of the most historic moments of the Golden Era of WWE. The show was so historic that it was brought back for a short period of time from 2006 to 2007.

This DVD collection features some of the best matches of Saturday Night's Main Event, including a great Steel Cage match between Hulk Hogan and Paul Orndorff, the controversial WWE Championship match between Hulk Hogan and Andrie the Giant, the explosion of the Mega Powers against The Twin Towers and a very underrated Intercontinental Championship match between The British Bulldog and Shawn Michaels.

Im old school wrestling to the bone and this is a prime example of pure nostalgia , It is WWE best attempt at capturing the golden era on A dvd set , now i do have the complete collection of original episodes on dvd but as a modern professional production this set captures most of the shows highlights over the 36 episodes and i did love the added touch of Mean Gene presenting as a media guy myself he is a big idle to me !! , there was room for improvement for eg. 2 or 3 matches in particular macho man vs jake the snake from feb 92 and ultimate maniacs vs money inc from nov 92 but apart from these it is great !! ive been waiting for a sequil to be released that would have these matches and more but considering WWE'S mentality and outlook they might think they took leave of it after this set
