Product Description

Review

'The book is essential reading for all training and practicing teachers and other professionals working with challenging pupils...This is an excellent book that links learning and behaviour, via the term "learning behaviour". The use of this term seeks to demonstrate that promoting learning and managing behaviour should not been seen as separate issues.' - Ralph Surman, Deputy Head, Contrell Primary School, Nottingham

Excellent! 18 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Buy this book and you'll probably never need to buy another. Usually books on behaviour are either in the form of tips for teachers or very theoretical. This book combines both. If you need practical strategies that will work for the majority then they are here but if you need to problem solve around particular pupils the behaviour for learning framework provides a tool. It's a book that you need to work at to fully understand the behaviour for learning framework. Chapter 3 provides a useful introduction to the behaviour for learning approach and I've been able to start applying the principles in my day to day practice. This is followed by some in-depth chapters that provide a deeper insight into what is meant by `learning behaviour' and each of the three behaviour for learning relationships. These are heavier going and if you're just looking for a `quick fix' this book may not be for you. Personally I found I actually enjoyed the mixture of intellectual challenge combined with chapters including strategies I could implement straight away in the class. I felt that the authors were treating me like a thinking professional rather than trying to offer me off the shelf strategies that experience proves work with some pupils and not with others.

Highly recommended 4 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I can't add much more to what the first reviewer says. This is a great book. It's also good value for money - especially at Amazon's price. You'd normally have to buy several different books to cover this range of material. There's practical strategies, theory, educational history, an overview of policy and guidance in relation to behaviour, consideration of the issues related to transitions and some coverage of SEN. It's difficult to think of anything else that could usefully have been included - maybe something specifically on Every Child Matters and working with other agencies but it's still definitely a 5 star book. Highly recommended for its quality and value for money.

'The refreshing feature of this book is that the authors do not claim to be
promoting a whole new approach to behaviour or replacing what's already
available, they just advocate using their framework in order to select and
evaluate any behavioural strategy. So many books on behaviour seem to say
'if you do it this way then you'll be ok' and ultimately leave the reader
frustrated when, of course the approaches don't work for all pupils. Part
of the appeal of the book is its realism and lack of prescription. It's not
short on strategies and contains a number of very practical chapters but it
is open in acknowledging what most experienced teachers already know - there
isn't a single set of strategies that will work for all pupils. This is
where the behaviour for learning framework comes in and allows the teacher
to think specifically about what behaviours they want to promote in
individuals and how to do this via the pupil's relationship with self,
relationship with others and relationship with the curriculum.

It is good too to see this book includes a chapter specifically on dealing
with more challenging behaviour rather than assuming that positive
management strategies will be sufficient to prevent such problems. This
chapter gives a lot of guidance on understanding and responding to such
behaviour.

The opening historical chapter is also worthy of mention. It makes the
important but often overlooked point that you need to understand pupil
behaviour and your management of it in the context of a messy education
system that involves inheritances from the past as well as current competing
agendas. This more sociological perspective is rarely covered in books aimed
at teachers - or I would guess in many teacher training courses nowadays.

It's not a book that's going to be to all tastes but if you're someone who's
ready to move on to something more substantial and thought-provoking than
the standard tips for teachers books you won't be disappointed.'
