A year or so ago I bought a 1998 VW Polo with a (Chinese) CD/Radio fitted by the previous owner. This cd/radio was the most infuriating piece of equipment I have ever owned, it switched itself on and off randomly and the CD had no memory so went into spasms when the road was anything but perfectly smooth.
I researched 'Amazon' for an affordable replacement and the 'BEAT 185' seemed to fit the bill with the benefit of no moving parts. I checked the reviews and placed the order with 'Free Supersaver' delivery. It arrived (in Portugal)in three days and installation was simple and logical, as the plug fitted was compatible with the one on the car's loom. I programmed all the radio channels etc which was straightforward and tested the SD and USB readers. An hour or so later I proudly showed the 'missus' my handywork only to find it had lost its memory! I recalled one of the reviewers mentioning a similar problem and checked the wiring. The 'permanent' and 'switched' live wires were crossed so I had to reassemble the connector socket, after which all was well.
It's been installed a couple of weeks now and performs well. Portuguese radio isn't always good so I use the USB, SD & Aux quite a lot. Don't be too ambitious with your music collection on the USB & SD as it's difficult to navigate, particularly on the move. Better to make a playlist and load that and use the 'Random' setting. I use my iPod in the 'Aux' and it's great (and familiar). I was impressed with the sound quality which has plenty of adjustment potential. The volume is good, in fact more than my speakers can handle without distortion.
Naturally there are some downsides, adjustment of the volume is accompanied by loud 'beeps' at every increment. The 'mute' can only be accessed from within the setup menu or the remote control. (easier to turn the thing off). Now for the remote control, frankly I just don't get it, by the time I've found it, I could have adjusted the unit manually (with the exception of the 'mute'). Maybe the remote control would be more useful in a mobile home or something.
In conclusion this is a nice little unit with no moving parts so theoretically nothing to go wrong. The price is excellent, the 'Free Supersaver' delivery is ideal especially for 'expats' who are sometimes 'nobbled' by delivery charges.
