When I first got this I was extremely disappointed, using the striker provided is absolutely useless, it has a very rounded and fairly soft (relative) edge. I just took it off and replaced it with a para-cord lanyard.
I actually bought two by accident. So I was even more annoyed. However, I gave this item a second chance by using the back of my mora 510 knife (ground down to a sharp square back). With this it worked perfectly, many hot sparks, with some lasting well over a second (basically a thin slice of the alloy comes off and burns a little slower. I have used this to light several types of tinder. I have also used it to start my alcohol stove multiple times. Sparks are very bright, brighter than the light my fire ones I think, though it is hard to tell without a side by side comparison. The main difference between this and the Swedish "light my fire" fire steel is that it is relatively harder alloy which takes a bit more force or a sharper edge to strike a spark. I found that you also had to use a faster movement. The little button compass works as expected, it is pretty well secured and doesn't really get in the way. If you want to save some money and are planning on using this with your own striker or the back of a good knife then it is perfect. If you want "out of the box all-in-one package just spend a little more and get the original light my fire ones.

I bought this as a second Flint, this is just useless...
Don't buy, not even worth me typing anymore. If you are looking to actually use the product buy something else.

Very handy item, I keep it outside with my BBQ and it doesn't rust or anything. Easy to strike up a fire with, before I was always running out of or misplacing my matches.
