It is always good to see Peter Cuching in anything, especially as Holmes. As a state-side viewer I had to purchase a multi-region DVD player as these are not available here.

The Sherlock Holmes stories are faithfully created on every DVD in this box set but it is so dated. I remember seeing these on BBC TV in the late 1960s or early 1970s and of course then TV was a 405 line black and white set. On my 2009 large plasma they have not transferred well with the years and the sets and location scenes look dated. Of course they should not date - after all its the late 1800s we are seeing but the BBC set designers spent no money on the sets and any paintings Holmes has on his walls look as though they were painted in 1969 - the painting of the hound of the Baskervilles looks like it was painted in a 1969 sixth form art class.
Apart from a great Peter Cushing the rest of the acting is stillted - watching some of the DVDs is a particlar chore.

The Peter Cushing discs are classics of their type and era. Modern ones (silk stocking, ugh!) better forgotten as untrue to Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes.
