4.0 out of 5 stars The BBC Sessions, 27 Dec 2006
This review is from: BBC Sessions (Audio CD)
For anyone who saw Marmalade live in their pre-charts days, this collection will bring back memories of the energy and excitement they generated on stage before disappearing into the pop mainstream. Featuring the classic line up of Dean Ford, Junior Campbell, Graham Knight, Pat Fairley and Alan Whitehead, roughly half the CD is devoted to material from their stage act - Losing You, Sixty Minutes Of Your Love, Boogaloo Party, Seven Days etc.

On the down side, the remaining tracks are made up of a couple of their own pop singles and some fairly dubious covers of contemporary chart hits. As the broadcast dates move from 1967 to 1969 so the `next track' button on the remote control becomes more useful.

That aside, this is still well worth having. Of the twenty-seven tracks on the CD, at least half of them are excellent and that's not bad going for any compilation. This is also a rare chance to hear some first rate musicians playing without the hindrance of modern studio production.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memory Lane, 2 July 2004
By Tartanundies - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: BBC Sessions (Audio CD)
At first glance one is left to wonder what the quality of the sound will be like. But after a few spins on the turntable(CD player) the clock is turned back to a time when bands like the Marmalade were crafting a sound that would eventually bring the four Scots and Englishman international fame and fortune. This historical collection of mostly cover songs at the BBC gets better as the group warms to the environment of the live studio sets. The stand out songs on the live set are Loving Things, This Old Heart Of Mine, Mr. Business Man, Baby Make It Soon, Gimme Gimme Good Loving, Reflections Of My Life and Melting Pot. The linear notes are very informative and the overall packaging layout and design is a credit to the research and hard work by the staff at Sanctuary Records. The BBC Sessions CD brought back many memories for myself as I was fortunate to see the Marmalade perform live in 1968 at the Oasis Nightclub in Edinburgh, Scotland. This collection of live radio songs is a must for any music fan that witnessed the rock music explosion of the mid 1960's.
