We forget at our peril the continuing legacy of the late great John Peel, the Margrave of the Marshes. His Peel sessions had a regular and loveable habit of squeezing better performances out of some artists than they recorded on there more formal studio albums. Some 2000 bands recorded 4000 sessions altogether creating an invaluable library of great performances (and frankly a couple of pretty bloody awful ones!). Various diverse artists contributed ranging from the Smiths, Lift to Experience, P J Harvey, Robin Trower, Ivor Cutler, The Bhundu Boys, Godspeed You Black Emperor and what appeared to be the complete recorded output of the Fall!

Hard edged Mancunian minstrels "I am Kloot" also produced some excellent sessions for Peel and this album gathers together songs from their first two albums, creating in effect a mini "Best of". Seek out the wonderful and gentle acoustic version of "From your favourite sky" which I prefer to the original. ""Life in a day" is all drums and powerful menace, while the aching version of "Proof" saunters along at a nice old pace. Opener "Storm Warning" is a dark and brilliant highlight while "Stop" is true Manchester as opposed to Delta blues.

All the signs and component parts which have now led to their stellar new album "Sky at Night" are here with the exception that the songs don't quite meet that high water mark. This is an album nonetheless full of fascinating clues for what was about to come and is a worthy addition to some of the best Peel Sessions released to date.
