By freewheeling frankie TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This is the ultimate Messiahs record - live in front of a good sized crowd at London's Forum, at the brief height of their success. The rhythm section are an awesomely powerful, well-drilled machine - Kenny Harris's drumming almost unavoidably conjures up visions of steam locomotives with all the pistons and connecting rods going like crazy ... Over the top of it (WELL over the top ...) Bill Carter rants (about American cars and Jesus mostly) and slashes at his guitar. You can tell it was very loud (it was ...)

But somehow there are tunes in there, with a style all of their own - the Messiahs were a completely unique band, faint comparisons could be made with Motorhead (probably the nearest record anyone else has made to this is No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith, and the Messiahs could have done a wicked version of Overkill) and Dr Feelgood but there was something far more berserk about them, and the rhythm section is as relentless as the former and as tight as the latter - and you couldn't really call them either a metal band or a rhythm & blues band. Plus the lyrics are from another place altogether - the very strange private universe of Bill Carter, where all the cars have fins and the women are called Wilma.

If you haven't heard the Messiahs before, this is as good a place to start as any. It's one of the great rock albums of the 80s (well, it was recorded in the 80s - took 4 years to be released) and strongly recommended to anyone that likes basic, raw, relentless, intelligent rock'n'roll and a mean riff.

Like Jesus With Guitars 19 Aug 2001
By Edward Dean - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Well, since the other reviewers here seem to be gloating about their Messiahs purchases, I'll just let slip that I own a mint vinyl copy of Gun-Shy...oh yeah, about this disc...well, the Screaming Blue Messiahs were one of the greatest punkabilly outfits ever to grace this salty earth...if you can't get on the goodfoot with these fellas, well sir, you just ain't human. Of course live albums are contractually obligated to have miserable sound quality, but try to get ahold of this anyway. It'll kick your Backstreet Boys CD's off the rack and set 'em on fire, and that can only be a good thing.

I hate to gloat 5 Dec 1999

I hate to gloat, but I own all 4 of the Messiahs cd's. That's right - I followed em when they were out there being under appreciated. Best band no one has ever heard of. I have yet to meet anyone that knows a damn thing about the Messiahs. One of the best live bands I've seen.

Go track down Gun Shy. Pay any price.

These guys are great..re-release their work!! 15 Jun 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The fact that these guys are no longer screaming is a tradgety! They had a sound unapproached by any other band. Shriekback ,in my view, in their earlier music projected the same energy...and both lead singers had no hair...a coincidence!? Fact is I had their first albumn on record but would dearly love it on Disc..so if you can help...email me at chris@centralpower.co.nz I WANT THIS ALBUM....it is the greatest!!!! I have searched America and Australia for a copy but so far come up empty handed...please help me...I'm dying out here.
