5.0 out of 5 stars Very good proms guide 24 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was tempted to buy the kindle version of this book since it was slightly cheaper but thankfully I kept traditional. The presentation is very good.
I had bought the book guide before a few times but its expensive for me, And so the last four years I have looked on the website for details.
I like to view the concerts when there is a TV transmission. But since some TV concerts are not live and have been recorded for later transmission I would rather know in advance if a concert is to be on TV rather than hear it live on radio and then find out a week later that I could have experienced it on TV.
This year I looked at the website and the information about TV transmission was missing so went back to the book even if it does cost more money than I would like. In fact the website was a bit of a mess when I looked.
On reflection this is the best way to be guided through the proms. And I am glad I went back to the traditional book. The TV guides only give information for that week and some concerts are recorded in advance of more than a week. The Radio Times had a guide apparently but it also lacked the full details for the season. This book was always the obvious choice from the beginning so lesson learnt and next year I will just get the book again.
Its a great guide with good information and pictures. It is actually worth the money.

It's so cheap one shouldn't carp but there was no wall chart this year! Its been useful to work out a 'proms plan' ahead of the opening of booking, but I still had to wait over 2 hours in the online queue and missed the chance of first night tickets. However that's hardly a criticism of the guide which follows a fairly well worked out pattern. I haven't yet read many of the articles and it's difficult to avoid judging the programme at the same time. Last year was exceptional in having a complete Beethoven symphonies cycle. I suppose the big event this year is Wagner which is less to my taste. However there's quite a lot of - for me - new composers, Lutoslawski for one (another centenary but only 100) so I'm looking forward to the start of the season.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best Guide to the Proms I know 24 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the best Guide to the Proms that I know of. I do wonder if it is really good value for money, as whilst it is the definitive list of the concerts, it is little more than that plus a load of adverts and some articles. At the end of the day I think it is all down to whether you think the concerts this year are sufficiently of interest to want to book tickets or listen to on the radio or watch on TV. You need to buy the guide first to form that view. As musical tastes of poeple who attend the Proms are so wide and varried, I don't think it would be fair of me to comment, apart from saying I think there have been better years on offer in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good old proms 25 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you cut through the nationalistic rubbish of the pagentry, good concerts for all. Get yourself this book. Tune in each evening on the radio and enjoy. OR....go promming and have the choice of the arena or gallery tickets for only £5 ...yes still a fiver....on the day.

(Although the golden days of John Drummonds directorship are still missed)

Excellent stuff....and superb book. It will be with me all summer :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential !! 1 Feb. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I buy this every year, not that I attend the performances but I do try and watch the selected ones on TV. This guide enables me to have a complete overview. WARNING concerts scheduled for broadcasting later than the live performance do not always have the full concert so don't count on getting all you want. Couldn't do without this guide!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to a great annual event 17 Jun. 2013
By Big Ben TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although the guide does contain much information that is on line, it is so convenient for a dedicated Prom fan that it is well worth the price at under £4 post free. Missing some events is not an option!
The articles are good, too.
Recommended to Proms enthusiasts!

4.0 out of 5 stars proms programme 25 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As in previous years all programmes are listed. What is missing however this time are the biographies of the artists. While one understands the need for the book to pay for itself, there are too many advertisements. The articles on composers are, as always, good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must 19 Dec. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A must to all who enjoy watching, listening and following the BBC proms each summer. I like to plan ahead all the concerts I wish to listen to on the radio or at times watch on television. The book is full of interesting facts too. Well worth the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Proms Guide
It is very expensive and full of advertising when all I really want is the programme details. Perhaps we need a poor persons guide while we save up for the tickets.
