For those like me who need to grasp the structure of a language before learning it properly, I have always found the grammar books in this series very useful.
It takes you through all the different parts of speech, with examples of use which also help with learning the vocabulary.

This is not for beginners but it's a great book for those who want to move up from the useful get-by phrases to customising them to fit the situations they expect to meet. Probably ideal for those who want to know the "why" as well as the "what" in improving your French - I certainly found that worked for me. It's also concise, easy to use and light enough to add to the dictionary in your hand baggage.

Good while it works.
It's a truly well written book, would recommend it to any fresh learner. The only bad thing is weak binding, the leafs fall out easily.
