This is definitely one of the great recordings Sinopoli made with DG. The sublimely moving rendition of the famous Intermezzo alone can make it indispensable for every classical music lover, but with such wonderful singing from both soloists and chorus, finely balanced with the warmly expressive orchestra, this must be the first choice. I like Karajan's version too, but his account of the Intermezzo lacks atmosphere and feeling, paced too fast.

This recording is a beautiful snapshot of the sound the late Giuseppe Sinopoli was achieving with the Philharmonia and DG in the 1980's and 1990's.
The singing is splendid as one would expect from this stellar cast (Juan Pons is superb as Alfio) but it is the orchestral sound that wins the day.
Sadly only available as an Mp3 at the time of writing. (Sept 2011)

A short review for a short opera

This recording is just amazing. Domingo is incredible everytime he makes a sound, but specially in his "O Lola" and in his "Mamma, quel vino é generoso". Every part of the chorus is just amazing, specially when they sing the brindis with Turiddu "Viva il vino spumeggiante". Baltsa is also very good and she makes a perfect alongside Domingo. Pons, althoguh Alfio doesn't have that much vocal appearance, is great(to hear Pons well listen to him in La Traviata). The orchestra and Sinopoli do a great job and they put a lot of emotion into the music. I highly recommend this Cavalleria.

Stunning

This Cavalleria is, in my opinion, the best one on record. Placido Domingo is PERFECT for his role, with much passion and fire in his singing. Agnes Baltsa is an exquisite Santuzza, having a voice the soars up to the high notes, and a very beautiful middle voice. Her high notes are also very well controlled, and are not wiry or screechy. Vera Baniewicz is a lovely Lucia. She has a very rich contralto voice. Juan Pons is wonderful as the Jealous husband. To sum it up, every voice is very well suited for it's part. A dream cast if I've ever heard one. One of the highlights of the CD for me is the Easter hymn "Innegiamo"...By the end of it, I feel like standing up and applauding. This is an absolutely gorgeous Cavalleria...from the Star Soloists to the Grand Chorus and the Orchestra, it's absolutely glorious. This is the Cavalleria to buy.

Although the general sound of this recording is sometimes a bit 'blank', which is probably due to the recording location chosen, this is truly one of the most wonderful recordings of Cav. I have ever heard. This is such great music! Baltsa is great as Santuzza, although her live performances of this role are are 'spicier' and more passionate than she is letting us hear on this CD. The interaction between Baltsa an Domingo is great. Highly recommendable!
