Book Description

5 Jan 2008 No B.
Here it is: no warm 'n fuzzies, no academic theories--just hard-core strategies from real world trenches...the long-overdue management book no one but Dan Kennedy would dare to write. This is your permission slip to take back control of your business, enforce standards, manage for maximum profit and actually get performance from your people! Kennedy covers: * The true nature of employer-employee relationships: friendly while you feed them (Why ownership mentality is a futile and dangerous goal) * The two most crucial (and liberating) management decisions * The worst number in business is...(fix this before it's too late!) * Leadership is vastly overrated: a new, rational model for profitable productivity * Why and how to make marketing the master--all others servants * Mice at play, and how to get compliance when the cat's away * Finding the magic "GE-Spot" for your particular business' greatest success with its customers * Fairness be damned--to the winners the spoils (it's time to start paying for performance, not for showing up) * Is a happy workplace a productive workplace? a serious look at the new, fun mandate--lies the management theorists sell * Managing the sales process--the biggest instant improvement (more $ now! )

If you run a business, regardless of whether or not you have employees, then you should read this book. I can't think of any good reason why you shouldn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some People Will Probably Be Fired Because of This Book! 4 May 2008
By Benjamin Glass - Published on
I've been reading Dan Kennedy's stuff and attending his seminars for years but I have to say I was shocked at how blunt this book is. Kennedy won't make any friends among employees (and vendors) who don't understand that they are zebras (you'll have to read the book to see what that means) and that the sole reason that the person running the show (biz owner) has a business in the first place is to make a profit.

Kennedy has little time for whiners who complain that the minimum wage isn't high enough or that employers should learn how to "handle" persnickety employees so that the employee "feels good."

Rather, Dan's blunt point is that business owners take too much crap from employees and their crying and as a result, are being robbed blind by most of them.

When you start to read this book you'll probably say "well, this doesn't happen in my business" but as you go through the book, detailed example by detailed example, I can guarantee that you (biz owner) will see yourself and one or more of your employees/vendors somewhere.

The book is not all negative. In fact its filled with great ideas to get maximum productivity out of those who you choose to allow to work with you. It all starts, though, with remembering that the only reason that you should be running a business is to make a profit for yourself. Start there--otherwise go get a job and work for someone else.

With that as the premise, why in the world would you let your employees steal anything from you. He's not just talking about a case of Coke out of the bag room, or something obvious as money out of the drawer (though he does have examples in the book of that) but stealing your money by being unproductive (or worse--like actually trying to bury your business.

I recommend this book 100% for all business owners, but especially those small business owners. It comes with a CD which is a very good interview that Lee Milteer did of Dan Kennedy about Ruthless Management of People and Profits.

I do think that some folks will be fired after the boss reads this one.. but Dan has recommendations for them, too. Like: get more education, hang out with winners; understand that while there is no place like the United States for opportunity, the world owes you NOTHING.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone who runs there own business 15 Nov 2010

This book confirms what I've thought for years and has allowed me to give myself permission to act on some of the things discussed in the book. I've owned my business for 15 years and wish I had read this book 15 years ago!! I highly recommend it, best $10 I've ever spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Any new or existing business owners should take the time to read. 27 Feb 2014
By Dan Zenisek - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a business owner for the past 15 years I truly enjoyed reading this book. Easy to read and follow as I can only read portions at a time.
After reading I bought additional copies for other business owners and offered as gifts.
Even if you feel you have a good grasp on your current business situation, this book can be an excellent refresher. Dan Kennedy tells you real life experiences and explains how the real world is, refreshing perspective as many owners sometimes live in a fairyland .

5.0 out of 5 stars Spot ON 5 Feb 2014
By Chris Stage - Published on

As with most entrepreneurs I have been on both sides of the fence, employee and business owner. Mr. Kennedy hits the nail on the head. If I had not taken action to rid myself of one employees it would have certainly ended in the loss of my client.
Thanks Dan for your incite. Every part of your book is spot on as well as entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for any business person 11 Dec 2013
By Daryl Marsden - Published on
Dan gets to the point of ruthless management. The reality of business today is that we must watch every part of our business so that we don't leak profits from the inside out. Its tough enough in our competitive world. Dan tells it like it is and some of the advice seems a little cruel and untrustworthy but it is sage advice.
