Book Description

1 Feb 2011
In 2001, Hellboy quit the B.P.R.D., leaving Abe Sapien to lead Liz Sherman and a bizarre roster of special agents, defending the world from occult threats, including the growing menace of the frog army, first spotted in Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. Mike Mignola and Dark Horse present the complete Plague of Frogs saga, from Hollow Earth to The King of Fear. The first book re-establishes the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense after Hellboy's departure, cracks open the secrets of Abe Sapien's origin, and sets the War on Frogs in motion.Hellboy creator Mike Mignola teams with co-writers Christopher Golden (Baltimore), Geoff Johns (Blackest Night), Tom Sniegoski (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and others for occult adventure rendered by Ryan Sook (X-Factor), Cameron Stewart (Seaguy), Scott Kolins (The Flash), and, making his Hellboy-universe debut, longtime award-winning B.P.R.D. artist Guy Davis!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent comics at excellent value 29 Jun 2011
By Gareth Simon TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
The B.P.R.D. is a spin-off series from the regular Hellboy comic book series. The stories here are collected from 2003-2005, and amount to 360 pages of comics, plus sketches and miscellaneous art work. According to the Introduction, the B.P.R.D. was given its own series after the events of `The Conqueror Worm' - see Hellboy Library Edition Volume 3: Conqueror Worm And Strange Places (Hellboy Library Edition (Dark Horse)) - when Hellboy resigned from the organisation to go off exploring into the darker corners of their universe. The stories and artwork are excellent. This volume, and the associated Hellboy Library collections, offer the `original' paperback collections at a cheaper rate than the originals, in an excellent hardbound format, along with extra material. This is excellent comics at an excellent value.

4.0 out of 5 stars a valuable exploration of the hellboy universe 26 Aug 2011
By bariton
Format:Hardcover
This book is really quite absorbing and fills in parts of the BPRD that are only hinted at in the Hellboy volumes. Especially valuable is the Abe Sapiens origin story. The book itself is not quite as nice as the HB library editions, but far superior to the softcovers; my first Hellboy softcover volume fell to pieces in my hands on second reading... the dust jacket is actually an improvement, since the library editions were cloth and picked up the dust.

Definitely a good place to explore the larger world of Hellboy's universe, and I'm looking forward to getting more BPRD... I read this one all in one go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Volume for a great title! 12 Mar 2011
By sv loth
Format:Hardcover
This is the kind of book that makes my modest library shelve proud. The book itself is beautiful. The hardcover format always add an extra dimension of satisfaction to any comic book reader and here the final product is flawless. As fo the content itself, well, you won't be disapointed. It's dark, lovecraftian, twisted and creative. While most stories are written by Mignola, they are not illustrated by a common artist. For me Guy Davies is the best out of this volume even though on many occasion others shines by their style in depicting Mignola's world with hellish precision.
Nuff said! A must for any serious comic lovers
