Product Description

Review

"Wonderful. A masterpiece."

(Kate Kellaway Observer)

AS SEEN IN COMMENT ARTICLE BY NICKY PARKER, AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

"We endorse picture books for young children, such as Azzi in Between, which is about a refugee child… We need to move beyond the status quo."

(The Bookseller)

'Her sensitive handling of it masks the weight and significance of the subject which Garland is introducing to her young readers.'

(The Independent on Sunday)

An attractively produced book that succeeds in explaining some of the difficulties faced by an immigrant child adjusting to the culture of a host country.

(School Librarian)

a very powerful story

(Juno)

Sarah Garland tenderly creates a story of hope from the troubled experience of immigration in this warm-hearted picture book.

(Julia Eccleshare Guardian)

It is unusual to come across a picture book that one feels so strongly about that one wants everyone – whatever their age – to read it... Garland treats her subject with unpatronising, well-informed sensitivity.

(Kate Kellaway Observer)

A tour de force … full of warmth and love.

(Books for Keeps)

A small miracle of compassionate storytelling.

(The Times)

From the Inside Flap

Azzi and her parents are in danger.
They have to leave their home and escape to another country on a frightening journey by car and boat.

In the new country they must learn to speak a new language, find a new home and Azzi must start a new school. With a kind helper at the school, Azzi begins to learn English and understand that she is not the only one who has had to flee her home. She makes a new friend, and with courage and resourcefulness, begins to adapt to her new life.

But Grandma has been left behind and Azzi misses her more than anything. Will Azzi ever see her grandma again?

Drawing on her own experience of working among refugee families, renowned author and illustrator Sarah Garland tells, with tenderness and humour, an exciting adventure story to be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

I,ve got this book for my 7years old grandson, we red it together. He love the story and the illustrations as the book has beautiful drawings on every page. THe book had sparked great conversation and my grandson said he would like that little girl from the story to be in his class so she can be help by his teacher to learn english.I truly belive this book should be in every primary school library, it will help children to understand other children problems in very gentle, tender way.

This is a beautiful and touching story about a little girl who has had her life turned upside-down because of war in her country. Little Azzi and her family have to flee and find refuge overseas. Azzi's elderly grandmother stays behind which causes the family much distress. The story gives insight into the worries that refugees and all immigrants face. Azzi worries about her grandmother, she can't communicate at school, her father can't get work.... Please don't be put off, ultimately this is an encouraging and optimistic tale . What I found so lovely about this book is the warmth shown to Azzi's family by the new people they encounter and the fact that children adapt to new situations and find happiness where they can. I really feel that this book would encourage children to be friendly and welcoming to any new and "different" children that they meet. Surely a must for every school library.

This is beautifully illustrated and tells the story of the impact of immigration on a family in a way that is very easy for children to understand. It helps to explain and prompts discussion about all the related issues. Highly recommended.

Well received by my daughter-in-law for reading to her 7year-old son. The book brings out a very real global problem in an easy to understand and memorable way.
