I read this book as a young secondary school student and it's still one of the few books I remember from that time. It deals with a Nepalese boys passage into manhood, when he travels from his village to join the British Army's Ghurkas and also the legendary khukri.

This Is a Marvelous Adventure Book 6 Mar. 2010
By MPhoto - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I had this book when I was a boy - I probably got it from my father, who picked up military adventure books to read while he was traveling around the world.

It's a very simple story about a Gurkha boy who joins the British army and has various adventures, with a little mysticism thrown in for spice. If you don't know who the Gurkha are, short version: they are a tribe who live in Nepal which produces some of the finest soldiers humankind has ever spawned. The British, no dummies, have cultivated them as military auxiliaries for centuries. For example, Prince William's personal bodyguards in Afghanistan are all Gurkhas. Note that "simple" does not mean "boring." There are twists and turns and culture clashes galore. But our hero is a good guy, and his friends are good guys, and the enemy are bad guys, and the good guys fight the bad guys.

I wish I had this book back again, I have no idea where it has got to during my wanderings through life. If you ever run across it, read it.

I don't think the book ever explains, by the way, but "Ayo Gurkha!" is the short version of the Gurkha war cry "Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gurkhali!" which literally translates to "Glory be to the Goddess of War, here come the Gurkhas!" The cry "Ayo Gurkha!" ("A Gurkha is coming!") has doubtless frozen the heart of many an evil fellow.
Review of Book on Gurkas in Malay Rebellion 18 Nov. 2013

Book is older, written in 1950's, but came in used but very serviceable condition. Awesome book & plot especially for kids (12-15?) hooked on video games, as it describes cultures, skirmishes, etc.
