Format:Paperback
I love Trollope when he is on top form and that's usually when he has something to lambast, either the government or religion or the state of society. There is a little of that here but nothing that gives the novel his usual drive and satire. Having said that it is beautifully written and full of interesting social history, but it is a little too sentimental for me.

The love story of the title is the sentimental core of this book but the comedy comes from the rejected lovers. The world loves the rich and finds the poor uncomfortable and dull - this is Trollope's realism. Otherwise there is little social or political comment. Characters from "The American Senator" appear briefly. "The American Senator" is far superior involving shrewd and entertaining criticism of fox hunting and the C of E, plus the hilarious saga of Arabella Trefoil whose activities and dire relatives outclass any character in "Ayala's Angel".

This is one of the most beautifully written books one could hope to read - but as are all Anthony Trollope's creations, in my opinion. It is full of marvellous characters, all wonderfully relayed through Trollope's gently compelling manner, and the story is intriguing, convincing (albeit, of course, "of its age"), and SO romantic. It is truly one of my favourite novels, and now that I haven't read it for a couple of years I can hardly wait to read it again.
