Product Description

Product Description

Osamu Tezuka, godfather of manga, here defies the conventions of his manga by utilising a completely original cast and relying solely on historical drama to drive the plot. AYAKO, pulls no punches and does not allow for gimmicks as science-fiction or fantasy may. Instead Tezuka weaves together a tale which at its core simply focuses on a single family, a family that could be considered a metaphor for a rapidly developing superpower. Overflowing with imagery of the cold war seen through Japan's eyes, this monumental work is regarded as Tezuka's most political.

A complete collection 18 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
This hefty volume (as thick as a Bible) appears to contain the complete story of Ayako in a hardcover binding. The rather fluffy board used for the covers would have benefited from a slipcover, as it tends to pick up dirt and grime from the lengthy sessions the reader will have to put in. It is also rather heavy.

The story is dark and unnerving at times, and some of the characters are truly revolting, but it drags the reader along, making you turn the pages even though you would have been much happier not knowing what Ayako's dysfunctional family did next.

The artwork is not overtly erotic, although the subject matter is definitely suited only for a mature audience. The images in this translation have been 'flipped' to their mirror images, to suit the normal English left-to-right reading direction, but the quality of printing and binding are excellent.

The story was originally serialized, and in one indigestible mass it tends to drag on.. the unpleasant situations and characters seem to carry on and repeat themselves long after their emotional impact has been made. The most interesting aspect of the book is not the somewhat sexualized child-victim Ayako herself, but rather the political murder mystery which is intertwined with her story. Like "MW", it was produced in a period when Tezuka -- by then in his mid 40s -- felt he had to adapt his work to the somewhat shocking and controversial themes of the times (1960s/early70s). A natural moralist, he brought his own brand of judgement to these topics.

Brilliantly observed adult storytelling. ?Worthy in my opinion of "Dickens" and "Shakespere"? from "The Godfather of Manga.Osamu Tezuka".,
Covering the period of Japans post "WW2" History from the late 1940's to the mid 1970's. as seen from the perspective of "Ayako" the youngest member of the "Tenge Family/Clan".

Excellently illustrated. including a Cameo appearance of "Tezuka" himself. ?Not sure about the "American English" translation of some words in parts? "Dis","Dat",etc. instead of "This","That" etc.?
