Well, it had to be a series didn't it? That said, the gently beguiling story of domestic intrigue in Cote D'Ivoire continues to enthrall if only because it isn't the Africa of the popular imagination. It is a series aimed at the younger reader(but then so were the "Tintin" albums of Herge, no?), but can be read profitably by us older folk. Nights under the stars and accidental fumbles with others' lovers, social climbing and the trials of work - they are all here again and just as endearing. Heck, this series could spark an upsurge in tourism to the Ivory Coast, if only to visit the places where Aya and Bintou and Adjoua and co enjoyed all these adventures! There is a lot of chaff out there in the graphic novel market, this is the wheat. Bon appetit!

Aya Comic Book. 23 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased for my Teen age daughter, The First two instalments I had already bought Aya & Aya of Yop city.
I think it is a very good sequel, from how quickly she read this book it can only be a good , From scanning a few pages myself any child would love reading. More so any child who fails to see themselves in stories, about a much more positive side of Africa, But the story could be set in any part of the world, themes on growing up youth identity, love family and friendship. Truly a good read since not many books on the market for Girls or painting (like I said above) Africa in a good light.

Myself and my daughter hope Marguerite Abouet and her husband Oubrerie Write more.

Soap opera shifts to the parent's generation 31 May 2010
By Gagewyn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Aya The Secrets Come Out is the sequel to Aya of Yop City and the third book in the Aya series. At the end of the previous book, Aya's father's mistress showed up at the family's house with children and surprised everyone, and Gregoire, a man ho from France, individually convinced multiple local ladies that he was wealthy and was going to take that lady to France. In this book he's in town promising to take multiple girlfriends who don't know about one another to France.

This book focuses more on the soap-opera relationships in the parent's generation. Aya's father has the mistress problems which intrude on work and spur his wife to visit relatives and go on the warpath and possible dates with other men. Aya's father's elderly drinking buddy loaned a man money several years ago and in return was promised marriage to his daughter, now a teenager. The wives all talk about this and become angry and have meetings and such.

For Aya's generation, there is a beauty contest which all the teenage and twenty-something women want to win and get catty about. The hairdresser meets all of them and they speculate on who he's gonna date. It turns out to be a dude, but only Aya and her sister know about this.

This book is more of the same, and if you liked previous books in the Aya series, you will likely like this one as well. This is not a good book to come in on, because characters who were introduced in other books appear in this one with no introduction. It would probably be confusing and details would be missed if you were to read this without reading previous books in the series first.

I have bought all 3 and am hoping for more. This one explains some of the mysteries from the first books. As always, beautifully drawn and great stories. Love the look into the life of the Ivory Coast in 1970!

OK well - Jonathan Ross has made a decent fist of entering the comic universe - which celebrity can't you wait for to enter the fray with their own graphic novel, and er, if you like, what would it be about ? 0 3 days ago
