THE SHAMEN

The Shamen, a forward-thinking fusion of electronica, acid house and psychedelia began their evolutionary life in Scotland in the mid 1980’s. They released their early albums on Moksha Recordings and then signed to OLI in 1989. The Shamen introduced the UK to Touring Club events with their 1988 Synergy shows, and were the first UK Band to release Singles, Albums and Live Show broadcasts… Read more in Amazon's Shamen Store

Here, the Shamen (thankfully) tire of churning out the chart-topping formula that spawned most of the Bossdrum album, and give us a rare treat of some 'proper songs' with electronic instruments (just like the good old days of Depeche and Erasure)!

Us synth fans are not usually given the opportunity to hear synths creating REAL songs with REAL lyrics and REAL meaning.... There is so much faceless (and just plain BAD) electronic music out there that this comes as a breath of fresh air. It should not be dismissed just because it is not the usual Shamen sound that we are used to hearing - give it a chance and you will discover one of the best synth albums ever :)

The weakest tracks are the ones that were remixed by the Beatmasters and released as singles, in an attempt to extend the Bossdrum success. The Beatmasters managed to CRUCIFY the songs Destination Eschaton, MK2a and Heal for the single releases, but thankfully the original Shamen-produced versions are left 'entact' here, or added as bonus tracks for your listening pleasure :)

This is a great Shamen album - right up there with Entact...

Nah, screw it - it's even better!

Deep, meaningful, intelligent electronica - get it and be whisked away to another space and time!

It is hard hearing this and saying you absolutely like this . There are tracks here that sound a little beyond me . Don't get me wrong I love The Shamen but this album has always been a struggle for me . Later albums such as Hempton Manor or UV are much more accessible but this continues to be a struggle no matter how much I've played it . Sometimes some of it turns out to be good sometimes the album falls flat . In the end it just still remains the most difficult of The Shamen albums to get into

Definitely a cut above yer average thinking-man's wallpaper music, The Shamen manage to create enough interest and diversity in this synth album to ward off sleep - which is more than can be said of much similar output of the era.

Ideal for gardening, washing-up etc. and can induce semi-euphoria if accompanied by a couple of large brandys.
