Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

If you've read any of the speculation surrounding Awfully Deep, you'll be aware that this is the down album from beleaguered Brit-Jamaican rapper Roots Manuva, a troubled work where he battles with the twin demons of depression and mental illness. Luckily, hard times can't entirely keep a good man like Rodney Smith down: barely two minutes into the bashed-up dub-hop of "Mind 2 Motion", he's already exhorting his audience to "Swing your pants!/ Swing your skirt!/ Shake away the hurt!" in an effort to keep the black dog from his door.

And truly, this is a long dark night of the soul: on the excellent "Colossal Insight", Smith turns to God to save his sanity; on pitch-black soul number "The Falling", he's lost in an apocalyptic reverie, fantasising about smuggling hand-grenades onto an aeroplane. But luckily, Smith is agreeably incapable of presenting his predicament without moments of dark levity: see the title track, which recalls a stint at a mental hospital populated by "crooked doctors and kinky nurses". A man who dispatches the Reaper with a nudge and a wink, Roots Manuva remains one of British hip-hop's most potent forces. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Another blinder from Rodney Smith 25 Feb 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Yet again, Mr Manuva has produced an album that is better than the last. Although, there are fewer "stand out" tunes on this than on RCSM and BNSH, the production quality and innovation exceed anything else he has done to date. The lad's done another blinder, and if you like Roots Manuva's other output or you've enjoyed anything from the UK hip hop scene over the last few years, you'll love this one.

How can 1000 words justify this Manuvadelic? To start by looking at Brand New Second Hand, through to Run Come Save Me and Dub Come Save me, now this... I've had it for a year, it's still in my 5 disc changer! Granted my first listen i did not understand. I expected Roots Manuva, but little did i know that he had just thrown the bar and smashed the boundary! The vibes kick with Mind to Motion, Rodney maintaining his defiance to get the people grooving. Chin High stands to be the pinnacle for me. The compostion of elements, the jumping beans of the soul alongside kick-start invocative inspiration, again this is one for the people. Whats really dissapointing is that my speakers get all shy upon arrival of the last track Tootbrush. Mr Manuva clears his chest to explain his 'avantgarde' mission, but hey, when this album is over, i know you're going to play it again. This man has truly evolved the state of 'UK Black' Music, call it Hip Hop, call it what you want, its the constant evolution of Roots Manuva. Producing and lyricism pioneered seamlessly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool tracks from Rodney 4 Feb 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I think this album hangs together more completely
than his other work, even though some of the tunes are maybe
not quite as strong. The tracks have more structure and variety,
which will be more palatable for a wider audience. For me,
two tracks really stand out, "A Haunting" and "The Falling" which
are really beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Rap - but not as you know it! 23 Jun 2006
Format:Audio CD
I'd say: "It's Rap - but not as you know it!" For me, this album was "love at first hear". Even if you are not normally a Rap fan, this is well worth a try! It has got great tunes and it grooves from the first to the last note, making you want to get up and "swing your pants" and "shake away the hurt".

It does not make for good "background noise". The thoughtful lyrics deserve a more thorough listen and you can only really understand the music if you make that effort.

The artist, Rodney Smith, clearly has been through an awful lot and has managed to express it in a captivating way. What is most refreshing: for once, here we have a UK black artist, so none of your alienating Bronx accent, but something you can identify with and that is a living comment on our society.

My favourites are "Mind 2 Motion", "Chin High" and "A Haunting", but all the tracks go straight into your ear and under your skin and remain there for quite a while. A great album, keep up the good work, Mr Smith!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Your Money Out 31 Jan 2005
Format:Audio CD
Buy it. This album is just excellent, justifying all the hype and expectation in my opinion. If you've got Brand New or Run Come Save Me you'll know the style of the man, this is just as funky but with some darker beats and breaks and a bit more experimentation. Top track is "Chin High" which to me is Sabres Of Paradise beats with Mr Smith's mad lyrics - just can't wait for the live version.

Peerless in the UK.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit To Tame 3 Aug 2007
Format:Audio CD
This album is good, but it doesnt seem like Manuvas really pushing himself, there are a few qaulity tracks on it but i prefer Alternately Deep and Dub Come Save Me. this ones to radio friendly and not dark or spacey enough. like i say Alternately Deep does the trick though and shows Manuvas still the man

5.0 out of 5 stars The UK is OK 24 Jan 2005
Format:Audio CD
Once again, Roots has shown that UK styles need not copy the US to be fresh and real and relevant. His live shows are excellent and his records keep getting better and better. Three cheers for Roots and Big Dada, the only label for discerning lovers of music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to be a bit disappointed 24 Mar 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is not a five star album. Sorry to say it but this is no-where near as good as brand new second hand or run come save me, which are masterpieces in their own right(s). If he'd released this album first he would not have received the critical acclaim he did, and he might never have made 4 albums. The hype this is receiving from sycophantic music magazines and others ignores the fact that, taken on its own merits and not just on the basis that its by roots manuva, this album is distinctly average.

Rebel Heart is a quality track, and move ya loin is good, and the last 3 tracks are passable, but the rest, while being characteristically quirky, is just a bit shallow, unmemorable and boring - the hype shown in many other reviews is not warranted. If you are a manuva fan who expects this to be his best album yet, you will be disappointed.
